- Cairo Citadel - The Citadel of Cairo, also known as the Citadel of Saladin, is a medieval Islamic fortification in Cairo, Egypt. Built by Salah ad-Din (Saladin) and expanded by later Egyptian rulers, it served as the seat of government and residence of Egypt’s rulers for nearly 700 years, from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Located on a promontory of the Mokattam hills near central Cairo, it offers a strategic view of the city and dominates the skyline. At the time of its construction, it was one of the most impressive and ambitious military fortifications. Today, it is a preserved historic site featuring mosques and museums.
- Al-Rifa’i Mosque - Al-Rifa’i Mosque (Arabic: مسجد الرفاعي), also known as the Royal Mosque, is situated in Midan al-Qal’a, next to the Cairo Citadel. It serves as the Khedival Mausoleum for the Royal Family of Muhammad Ali Pasha. Located opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, which dates back to around 1361, it was designed to complement the older structure. This was part of a 19th-century effort by Egypt’s rulers to link themselves with the glory of earlier Islamic periods and modernize the city. The mosque was built near two large public squares and several European-style boulevards constructed at the same time.
- Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is a monumental mosque and madrassa in Cairo’s historic district. Built between 1356 and 1363 during the Bahri Mamluk period, it was commissioned by Sultan an-Nasir Hasan. Known for its massive size and innovative architecture, it remains one of Cairo’s most impressive historic monuments.
- Al-Azhar Mosque - Al-Azhar Mosque (Arabic: الجامع الأزهر), known simply as al-Azhar in Egypt, is located in Cairo’s historic Islamic core. Commissioned in 970 as the new capital of the Fatimid Caliphate, it was the first mosque in a city that later became known as “the City of a Thousand Minarets.” Its name is believed to derive from az-Zahrāʾ, a title given to Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad.
