- Cave Church - The local Coptic church in Mokattam Village was founded in 1975. Following its establishment, the Zabbaleen community felt more secure in their settlement and began using more permanent materials like stone and bricks for their homes. Previously, due to their eviction from Giza in 1970, they had lived in temporary tin huts. In 1976, a significant fire in Manshiyat Nasir prompted the construction of the first church beneath Mokattam Mountain on a 1,000 square meter site. Additional churches have since been built into the caves of Mokattam. Presently, there are seven cave churches nestled within Mokattam Mountain. The Monastery of St. Simon the Tanner is the largest, featuring an amphitheater with a seating capacity of 20,000, making it the largest church in the Middle East. It is named after the Coptic saint, Simon the Tanner, who lived in the late 10th century…
- Coptic Orthodox Church of St. George (Mari Girgis) - The Church of St. George is a Greek Orthodox church located within the Babylon Fortress in Coptic Cairo. It is part of the Holy Patriarchal Monastery of St. George under the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and all Africa. The church’s origins date back to the 10th century or earlier. The current structure was rebuilt after a fire in 1904, with construction completed in 1909. Since 2009, the monastery’s hegumen has held the rank of bishop with the title Bishop Babylonos (“Bishop of Babylon”).
- Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus - The Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus is traditionally believed to be built on the site where the Holy Family—Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus Christ—rested at the end of their journey into Egypt. It is thought they lived here while Joseph worked at the fortress.
- Synagogue Ben Ezra - Also known as ‘the Synagogue of the Palestinians’ or ‘of the Jerusalemites’, this synagogue is no longer active due to the small population of Egyptian Jews and now serves primarily as a tourist site and Jewish museum. In the 19th century, the synagogue’s geniza, or storeroom, was discovered to contain a treasure trove of forgotten Hebrew, Aramaic, and Judeo-Arabic secular and sacred manuscripts. This collection, known as the Cairo Geniza, consists of approximately 40,000 items and was brought to the University of Cambridge in England through the efforts of Solomon Schechter. It is now divided among several academic libraries, with the majority housed at the Cambridge University Library.
- Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary) - Saint Virgin Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church, commonly referred to as the Hanging Church, is one of Egypt’s oldest churches, with a history dating back to the third century. It is part of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria.
