- Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church - Also known as Abu Serga, this church in Coptic Cairo is one of Egypt’s oldest Coptic Christian churches, dating back to the 4th century. It holds historical significance as the site where many Coptic Church patriarchs were elected, starting with Patriarch Isaac (681-692). It served as the episcopal church of Cairo and the See of Masr, replacing the former See of Babylon. Many bishops were consecrated here until the reign of Patriarch Christodulus (1047–1077). Tradition says the church was built where the Holy Family (Joseph, Mary, and infant Jesus) rested at the end of their journey into Egypt.
- Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary) - This church, also known as the Hanging Church, is one of Egypt’s oldest, dating back to the third century. It belongs to the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria and is named for its location above a gatehouse of the Babylon Fortress in Coptic Cairo. The church’s nave is suspended over a passage, and it is accessed by twenty-nine steps, earning it the nickname “the Staircase Church.” The land surface has risen about six meters since the Roman period, burying most of the Roman tower and reducing the visual impact of the church’s elevated position.
- Synagogue Ben Ezra - Located in the Fustat area of Old Cairo, the Ben Ezra Synagogue is sometimes called the El-Geniza Synagogue or the Synagogue of the Levantines. According to local legend, it is situated where baby Moses was found. In the 19th century, its geniza (store room) was discovered to contain a treasure trove of forgotten Hebrew, Aramaic, and Judeo-Arabic manuscripts, known as the Cairo Geniza. This collection was brought to the University of Cambridge by Solomon Schechter and is now divided among several academic libraries, with the majority housed at the Cambridge University Library.
