This year, following Pope Francis’s recognition of the Holy Family’s journey in Egypt as an official Christian pilgrimage:
Cairo Churches
Guests will be picked up from their hotel in Cairo and accompanied by a personal guide to visit the city’s churches. The tour begins with the Hanging Church and St. Sergius, followed by visits to the Church of St. George and the Fortress of Babylon in Old Cairo.
The Holy Family passed through Mostorod, leaving the desert behind and traveling southwards. They crossed the Nile to its eastern bank, heading towards Matariyah and Ain Shams.
These adjacent districts are now suburbs of modern-day Cairo, located about 10 kilometers from the city center. At the time of the Holy Family’s arrival, Ain Shams was home to a large Jewish community. In Matariyah, a tree known as “Mary’s Tree” still stands and is regularly visited, as it is believed the Family rested in its shade.
Continuing towards Old Cairo, the Holy Family paused in Zeitoun (Virgin Mary Church) before proceeding through what are now bustling quarters of Cairo.
Guests will enjoy lunch at an oriental restaurant, with an opportunity to learn about and taste local cuisine, before being driven back to their hotel with wonderful memories.
