- Giza Plateau - The pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx rank among the world’s most renowned tourist attractions, having been so even during Roman times. These magnificent structures served as the burial sites for kings of the 4th Dynasty (c.2613–2494 BC). The Great Pyramid of Giza was constructed for King Khufu (c.2589–2566 BC), while the other two were built for Khafre and Menkaure, his son and grandson. Khufu’s pyramid is the oldest and largest of the trio, and it remained the tallest man-made structure for 3,800 years!
Although the three pyramids are the most prominent features of the plateau, they are surrounded by numerous other monuments. Each king’s pyramid was part of a larger complex that included smaller queens’ pyramids, a satellite pyramid serving as a symbolic tomb for the king, and mastaba tombs for nobility and family members.
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - The only fully preserved likeness of the king is a three-inch high ivory figurine discovered in a temple ruin from a later period at Abydos in 1903. Other reliefs and statues were found in fragments, and many of Khufu’s buildings are lost. Information about Khufu is derived from inscriptions in his necropolis at Giza and later documents, such as the Westcar Papyrus from the 13th dynasty.
- Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple revealed several statues of Khafre, some discovered in a well in the temple floor by Mariette in 1860, and others during subsequent excavations by Sieglin (1909–10), Junker, and Reisner.
- Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid complex features a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple. The mortuary temple also contained several statues of Menkaure.

- The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - Commonly known as the Egyptian Museum or Museum of Cairo, this museum in Cairo, Egypt, boasts an extensive collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts. It houses 120,000 items, with a significant portion on display and the rest in storage. Built in 1901 by the Italian construction company Garozzo-Zaffarani and designed by French architect Marcel Dourgnon, it is one of the largest museums in the region. As of March 2019, the museum is open to the public, and in 2021, it is set to be replaced by the new Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza.
