Our journey will lead us down the twisting lanes of Islamic Cairo and the Citadel, pausing to appreciate significant historical landmarks and structures. From there, we will progress to the Saladin Citadel, a historic Islamic fort brimming with mosques and museums. Nestled atop the citadel is the Ottoman Mosque of Muhammad Ali, a 19th century symbol of his determination to obliterate the remnants of the Mamluk dynasty he supplanted. We will also make a visit to the largest area in Cairo. Our concluding destination is El-Arafa necropolis, humorously enough. This site, also known as the ‘City of the Dead’, is a cemetery that has stood for over 700 years in an urban area so densely packed that scores of people currently reside here among the graves. We will then move on to Coptic/Coptic Cairo to see the Hanging Church, Church of St. Barbara, and Ibn Ezra synagogue. Concluding the journey will be a drive to Islamic Cairo, where you will have the opportunity to delve into Khan El Khalili, Cairo’s traditional bazaar.
