Highlights
  • Valley of the Whales (Wadi Al-Hitan) - Wadi Al-Hitan, also known as “Whale Valley,” is a paleontological site situated in the Faiyum Governorate of Egypt, approximately 150 km southwest of Cairo. In July 2005, it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its numerous fossils of early whale species, the archaeoceti, which are now extinct. This site provides crucial evidence for understanding the evolution of whales from land-dwelling animals to ocean-going mammals. No other location in the world offers such a high number, concentration, and quality of these fossils, along with their accessibility and the site’s scenic and protected landscape. This is why UNESCO added it to the list of protected World Heritage sites. Although the fossils here may not be the oldest, their abundance and exceptional preservation, including some intact stomach contents, make this site unique.
  • Wadi El-Rayan - Wadi El-Rayan covers an area of 1759 km², with 113 km² occupied by the Wadi El Rayan lakes. It is located about 65 km southwest of Faiyum city and 80 km west of the Nile River. The valley features man-made lakes created from agricultural drainage, forming two separate Wadi El Rayan Lakes. The reserve includes a 50.90 km² upper lake and a 62.00 km² lower lake, connected by waterfalls. There are three sulfur springs on the southern side of the lower lake, surrounded by extensive mobile sand dunes. The Wadi El Rayan Waterfalls are the largest in Egypt. To the south and southeast of the springs is Gabal Manqueer Al Rayan, where marine fossils and archaeological remains can be found. Gabal Madwera, near the lower lake, is known for its vast dune formations. In the northwest lies Wadi El Hitan, a protected area containing fossils of extinct whales.
  • Tunis - We will stop in the watermelon valley to explore the area and take photos, then visit the Magic Lake for some sandboarding. Midway through the tour, we will have lunch at a local restaurant. Finally, we will visit Al-Rayan Valley to take photos near the waterfalls.
  • Magic Lake Camp - Magic Lake, one of the most beautiful lakes in Egypt, overlooks sand dunes and is located in Wadi El Rayan in Fayoum. It is known for its stunning scenery and has been aptly named the Magic Lake.
