Into the Heart of Supramonte

The moment I set foot in Cala Gonone, I knew I was in for an adventure unlike any other. As a former city planner, I’ve always been drawn to the structured chaos of urban landscapes, but this time, I was ready to trade skyscrapers for rugged peaks and bustling streets for the serene wilderness.

Our journey began with a thrilling off-road drive, the 4WD vehicle expertly navigating the rocky terrain. The landscape unfolded like a masterpiece, each turn revealing a new vista more breathtaking than the last. The Supramonte of Dorgali and Baunei, part of the Gennargentu massif, is a place where time seems to stand still. The mountains, with their ancient plateaus and mysterious sinkholes, whispered stories of a bygone era. Our guide, a local with an infectious passion for the land, regaled us with tales of the region’s history and its pre-Nuragic and Nuragic sites, adding layers of intrigue to the already captivating scenery.

A Dance with Nature

As we embarked on the first of our mini-treks, the air was filled with the scent of junipers and the distant call of wild animals. The Supramonte is a sanctuary for wildlife, and I was eager to catch a glimpse of its elusive inhabitants. We were not disappointed. High above, a golden eagle soared majestically, its wings cutting through the sky with effortless grace. Griffins and falcons followed suit, their presence a testament to the rich biodiversity of the area.

The trek led us through dense forests and across rocky outcrops, each step bringing us closer to the heart of this untamed wilderness. We paused to admire the panoramic views, the Gulf of Orosei stretching out before us in a dazzling display of blues and greens.
