Battambang Province - I’ll pick you up from the hotel at 9:00 am. After a brief introduction, we’ll start by exploring the city, admiring the French colonial buildings, visiting the local market, and seeing the statue of Lok Ta Dambong Kra Nhoung (the symbol of Battambang). Then, we’ll proceed to our next destination.
-
Wat Samrong Knong - Our next stop is Wat Samrong Knong, an ancient Buddhist temple over 300 years old that served as a prison during the Pol Pot regime. I’ll explain the history of the Pol Pot regime and the significance of the temple. You can also visit The Well of Shadows (a killing field) where you can see the remains of victims. Afterward, we’ll spend a few hours visiting small villages and the countryside to observe local life, including families making bamboo sticky rice, rice paper for spring rolls, and dried bananas. We’ll sample some snacks and visit the fish paste market (Cambodian cheese) for a short walk.
-
Prasat Ek Phnom - Next, we’ll visit Ek Phnom temple, one of the oldest temples in Battambang, built in the early 11th century, even older than Angkor Wat. You’ll also see a large Buddha statue near the ruins.
-
Kampong Pil Pagoda - Before reaching the bamboo train, we’ll explore beautiful villages and the countryside, visiting fruit farms and a local pagoda along the river. The friendly farmers and children will greet you warmly. We’ll stop at a village to discuss local life and then visit the small Golden Gate Bridge near Kampong Pil Pagoda for some picturesque views before continuing to the bamboo train.
-
Bamboo Train Battambang - I’ll take you on a ride on the original bamboo train, possibly your last chance as the government plans to close it soon. The ride costs $5 per person, and you’ll see small villages and the countryside along the way.
-
Phnom Sampeau - Phnom Sampeau is known for its killing cave and bat cave. You’ll see the cave where victims were pushed to their deaths during the Pol Pot regime, with real skulls and bones inside the stupa. You can also hike to the top of the mountain for a stunning view and visit a Buddhist pagoda. Be cautious of the monkeys, as some can be aggressive. You can choose to walk, take a motorbike, or a pickup truck to the top.
-
Battambang Bat Caves - At this cave, you’ll witness millions of bats flying out, resembling a long dragon. The spectacle lasts for 30 to 40 minutes. After this final stop, I’ll take you back to your hotel.
