- Preah Vihear Temple - We will depart from Siem Reap at the crack of dawn (around 7 am) and head north for approximately 250 kilometres (a journey of 3 hours and 30 minutes) towards the border between Cambodia and Thailand. As we approach, the majestic Dong Rek mountain range looms on the horizon. The mountains stand at an average of 500 metres, with some peaks soaring to 700 metres. Nestled within this range is the historic site of Preah Vihear, offering breathtaking vistas of the sprawling Cambodian landscape below, extending to Phnom Kulen National Park to the north of Siem Reap. This strategic location with convenient access to Thailand was once a hideout for Pol Pot during his final years, providing him with a quick escape route.
- Chuor Phnum Dangrek - Our journey continues through Anlong Veng, a vibrant local marketplace, as we ascend the hill to reach our day’s highlight. The mountainous terrain here stretches across the summit of the Dong Rek Mountains, rising above 700 meters. A meal at a nearby eatery is part of the package.
The Preah Vihear Hindu temple, dedicated to the deity Shiva, was erected in the early 11th century, with references to documents dating back to the 9th century. This temple complex is a linear arrangement of holy structures connected by walkways and steps along an axis that spans 800 meters. For those in search of a well-maintained temple complex, this site is unparalleled, partly due to its secluded setting and the superior craftsmanship of its architecture. In addition to its historical and cultural significance, highlighted by an English-speaking guide, the sweeping views from the summit are considered among the most striking in the nation.
