Highlights
  • Calakmul Archaeological Zone - Travel the roads of the ancient Mayan city of Calakmul, one of the main capitals of the Mayan world and one of the largest archeological findings of the Twentieth Century. Discover the exuberant wildlife among the surrounding jungle, where you can spot monkeys, toucans, ocellated turkeys, deer and, if lucky, jaguars and pumas.

After picking you up in your hotel in Xpujil, we’ll drive for approximately one and a half hours, entering the Biosphere Reserve, where the ancient Mayan capital of Calakmul lies. The road opens unique chances to spot flora and fauna endemic to the region. The clean and fresh air makes for a full immersion trip into nature.

In the archeological site, we will walk through the paths for approximately four hours while telling you all about the meanings and uses of the buildings, as well as the history of this significant Mayan city from the Classic period.

If you’re looking for a full day immersed in a quiet and unique natural environment, this is it.

  • Reserva de la Biosfera de Calakmul - The archaeological site lies inside the largest tropical Reserve in Mexico: The Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. Covering over 700,000 square hectares, it will amaze you around every corner with its wildlife and biodiversity.

Calakmul is a must visit. - If you are interested in the Maya civilisation you can’t miss Calakmul! It is a mind boggling site well worth the trip to get there. Still quiet compared to most sites however this will change in the next few years as the Maya Train opens up. In the day we were there we were able to climb all structures. Ka’an Expeditions picked us up from our guesthouse in Xpujil and transported us to the site (thanks to our excellent driver Ivan) and guided us through the history of Calakmul site and the biosphere it sits within (thanks to our great guide Coral). Lovely lunch waiting for us in the site car park when we were done. Thanks for such a great trip! NOTE: We went on a Sunday, which meant there were no construction workers on the highway through the biosphere leading to the site which we hear can sometimes cause delays. The road appeared almost fully paved/complete in July 2024.

trusted professionals - Very friendly guide, very interesting excursion, perfect organization. Also there was almost no one in the place so we enjoyed the place almost alone.

Unforgettable trip & guide - The tour was amazing and Manuel is awesome guide with a lot of knowledge & humor. Even though we went by +40c through the jungle his upbeat mood and deep insights about the history and fauna made it that you forget about it. The breathtaking view on top is a once in a lifetime experience. If I could do it a second time I would love to have Manuel again as a guide.

Long, but very worthwhile journey to Calakmul. - Excellent tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and thorough. Transportation to/from Bacalar worked well, despite the insane truck traffic from all the Tren Maya construction. I would definitely use this guide service again.

Calakmul - good tour - Everything was fine on the part of the tour provider. The Coral guide was super friendly and very knowledgeable. The distance from Xpujil due to train works was 3 hours. Take it into account. They close on Mondays and you must leave before 1pm on Saturday and Sunday because they close the road for construction. And that is the bad thing about this trip, the construction of the Mayan train and the devastation is very sad. I hope in years to return and see everything improved
