Great day at Calakmul - Manuel as our guide and Ivan as our driver both made our trip to Calakmul a great experience. We were a group of 6 in total, and that was perfect. We climbed three pyramids, saw spider monkeys and howler monkeys and turkeys, and had a great cold lunch at the parking lot afterwards. We are happy we booked this tour.

Left Xpujil and after approximately a two hour trip, we got to Calakmul. We investigated the ruins, climbed the pyramid. - An amazing trip to Calakmul from Xpujil. Bianca was our guide. She was excellent, not only did she know the history of the Mayan ruins, she was very informative about the jungle and all the wildlife around us. Would heartily recommend.

Calakmul is a must visit. - If you are interested in the Maya civilisation you can’t miss Calakmul! It is a mind boggling site well worth the trip to get there. Still quiet compared to most sites however this will change in the next few years as the Maya Train opens up. In the day we were there we were able to climb all structures. Ka’an Expeditions picked us up from our guesthouse in Xpujil and transported us to the site (thanks to our excellent driver Ivan) and guided us through the history of Calakmul site and the biosphere it sits within (thanks to our great guide Coral). Lovely lunch waiting for us in the site car park when we were done. Thanks for such a great trip! NOTE: We went on a Sunday, which meant there were no construction workers on the highway through the biosphere leading to the site which we hear can sometimes cause delays. The road appeared almost fully paved/complete in July 2024.

Gorgeous vistas at Calakmul with Manuel - We did the tour with Manuel. It was good! We drove our own car behind the van and left after the tour - so missed lunch - but the whole experience was good. Some wildlife - lots of birds and monkeys. Next time I would hire a private guide versus doing the tour (unfortunately we had two toddlers in our group who screamed non stop - there really should be age restrictions on participants for the enjoyment of all guests). Climbed all structures and have some gorgeous photos.

A poor tour - I unfortunately cannot recommend this tour. One major reason for me to take the tour was to skip the difficult drive from Xpujil to Calakmul (considering we had to drive all the way from Bacalar already), but the reality is that in 2025 the road to the site is actually quite a nice one, albeit a bit narrow. The tour lasted 3 hours, and the guide was pressing us in order to keep the tight schedule, but the site is so massive that we ended up having to rush through it, and it did not feel nice. Lastly, the advertised "picnic right at the archaeological site. Surrounded by ancient monuments and the tranquility of the jungle" ended up being just a cold sandwich and a salad that we consumed in the parking lot of the site. This really was a bad ending to our journey. Especially if you have visited other Mayan sites, I highly recommend to go to the site on your own. If you need a guide, try to arrange it so that you can go at your own pace and not having to rush it.
