From Waves to Wildlife: My Journey on the Corobicí River Safari Float
In search of a different kind of adventure, I traded my surfboard for a raft and embarked on the Corobicí River Safari Float. Join me as I drift through the Dry Gallery Forest, encountering wildlife and savoring local flavors along the way.
Drifting into the Heart of the Dry Gallery Forest
As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves and soaking up the sun along the coasts of Central America. But every now and then, I crave a different kind of adventure—one that takes me away from the salty embrace of the ocean and into the heart of nature’s untouched beauty. That’s how I found myself in Canas, ready to embark on the Corobicí River Safari Float—a journey that promised a unique wildlife experience amidst the Dry Gallery Forest.
The day began with a warm welcome from our guide, Stevenson, whose knowledge of the local ecosystem was as vast as the ocean itself. Alongside him was Adrian, our driver, whose courteous demeanor set the tone for a day of relaxation and discovery. As we set off on our float down the Corobicí River, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of tranquility wash over me, much like the calm before catching the perfect wave.
The river, flanked by towering kapoks and figs, was a living tapestry of life. With Stevenson’s keen eye, we spotted bats hanging like tiny shadows beneath the branches, while crocodiles basked lazily on the riverbanks. The air was alive with the calls of howler monkeys and the graceful flight of ospreys overhead. It was a reminder that nature, much like the ocean, is a force to be revered and respected.
Navigating Rapids and Revelations
Our captain, Alberth (Colon), was a master at the helm, guiding us through the gentle rapids with the ease of a seasoned surfer navigating a challenging break. Each twist and turn of the river brought new surprises, from the vibrant plumage of egrets to the stealthy movements of lizards darting across the rocks.
As we floated along, I found myself reflecting on the parallels between this river journey and my life on the waves. Both require a balance of patience and spontaneity, an appreciation for the journey as much as the destination. Alberth’s skillful navigation allowed us to get up close and personal with the wildlife, offering photo opportunities that captured the essence of this unique ecosystem.
The gentle rapids added a touch of adventure to our float, a reminder that even in the calmest waters, there’s always a hint of excitement waiting to be discovered. It was a perfect blend of tranquility and thrill, much like the perfect surf spot that offers both mellow rides and exhilarating drops.
A Taste of Local Flavor
After our two-hour float, we were treated to a taste of local hospitality with fresh pineapple and refreshing beverages. The sweetness of the fruit was a delightful contrast to the earthy tones of the river, a reminder of the simple pleasures that make life so rich.
Our adventure concluded with a delicious lunch at Rincon Coribici Restaurant, where the food was as vibrant and flavorful as the landscape we had just explored. The service was impeccable, and the view—a sweeping panorama of the river and forest—was the perfect backdrop for reflecting on the day’s journey.
As I sat there, savoring each bite, I realized that this safari float had offered me more than just a glimpse into the heart of the Dry Gallery Forest. It had reminded me of the beauty and diversity of life, both in the water and on land. And as I prepared to return to the waves, I carried with me a renewed appreciation for the natural world and the adventures it holds.
