The Cathedral of Nossa Senhora de Lourdes, also known as the Catedral de Pedra, is a Roman Catholic church situated in Canela, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the southern region of Brazil.
This church is a prominent tourist magnet in the region known as Serra Gaúcha and is distinguished by its English Gothic architectural design. The cathedral features a towering structure measuring 65 meters and possesses a set of 12 bells in its carillon, which are formed from solid bronze and were crafted by the Italian Giacomo Crespi. Within its walls, one can find a trio of panels crafted from canvas by the painter Marciano Schmitz, which depict scenes such as the ‘Apparition of the Virgin’, ‘Allegory of Angels’, and ‘The Annunciation’. Additionally, the Stations of the Cross paintings were created by Pablo Herrera, a Uruguayan sculptor and connoisseur in the restoration of Sacred Art, implementing a blend of wood and clay with a base layer adorned with painted imagery superimposed upon the clay.
