- Miradouro do Terreiro da Luta - The Terreiro da Luta Viewpoint offers a stunning panorama, showcasing the vibrant mosaic of Funchal’s cityscape. In the distance, the iconic bay of this Atlantic city is prominently featured, framed by the vast ocean beyond.
Visiting the Terreiro da Luta Viewpoint is highly recommended not only for its breathtaking views but also for its historical importance. Here, visitors will find the Nossa Senhora da Paz Sanctuary, the island’s tallest monument, standing at an impressive five meters tall.
Designed by architect Emanuel Ribeiro, this marble statue was erected as a fulfillment of a vow made by the people of Madeira during the 1917 German submarine bombings of Funchal. Dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Monte, it holds deep sentimental value and is an integral part of the island’s cultural heritage.
- Pico do Arieiro - The Madeira East Tour ascends towards Pico Arieiro, standing at 1818 meters (5965 feet). It is the third highest peak in Madeira. As the ascent continues, the lush woodland gives way to bare rock. There are magnificent views over an endless series of knife-edge ridges and sheer cliffs. Cotton-wool clouds linger in the valleys. After leaving the peak Arieiro, the journey home includes enjoying the enormous Madeira juniper trees, which have become quite rare over the years.
- Ribeiro Frio - Departing from Pico Areiro, the journey continues uphill, passing small terraces lining the road where various fruits can be found before reaching the Madeira Laurissilva Forest. Ribeiro Frio is a charming spot nestled within the Laurissilva forest, which was classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1999. Here, the fresh, clean, cold water of the Ribeiro Frio (meaning cold river) is channeled into a series of deep pools to create a small trout farm. Ribeiro Frio is the starting point for several levada walks.
- Santana - The next stop is a charming village called Santana, which presents a picture of domestic and agricultural prosperity. The predominant color is the green of the terraced fields and hay meadows, interspersed with apple, pear, and cherry orchards. Among the haystacks are triangular thatched buildings, used by local farmers as cow sheds. Traditionally, people lived in these ingenious structures. Visitors will discover how spacious the Santana ‘A’ farmed buildings are when they visit one.
- Miradouro do Guindaste - Perched on one of the slopes of Foz da Ribeira do Faial, in the Santana municipality, the Guindaste viewpoint provides a spectacular perspective of Madeira’s stunning north coast. This spot is perfect for admiring the majestic Atlantic Ocean that embraces the island.
Renowned for the remarkable beauty of its surroundings, this viewpoint offers an idyllic scene where lush green mountains blend seamlessly with towering cliffs and the crystalline waters of the sea. Visitors can also glimpse the pebble beach of Foz da Ribeira do Faial and its unique geological feature—a columnar disjunction formed by ancient lava flows.
The Guindaste viewpoint presents a sweeping panoramic view of Madeira’s northern coastline, stretching from Faial to the eastern tip at Ponta de São Lourenço, including the dramatic Penha d’Águia rock formation. On exceptionally clear days, visitors can even spot the island of Porto Santo, located to the northeast.
- Porto da Cruz - Traveling down to the North Coast leads to the rural village of Porto da Cruz. Situated at the foot of a rock called Penha d’Aguia, and on the other side, steep terraced slopes. The only operational sugar mill on the north coast is located in this village. Its brick chimney stands tall in the village. It features a beautiful sea promenade. This small village of Porto da Cruz has a maze of alleys, and the former warehouses are being converted into cafes. Porto da Cruz is famous for its wine.
- Pico do Facho viewpoint - Machico’s bay was the first place where Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira landed when Madeira was discovered. It has an unusually shaped valley, resembling a balcony overlooking the sea and the mountains, in a municipality with an abundance of water. The sugar cane crops and their mills’ activities made it very important for Madeira’s economy until the 17th century. The eastern side of Machico bay is dominated by Pico do Facho, a 320-meter (1050-foot) high peak. It was named after the beacon (facho) that used to be lit here to warn residents of approaching pirates.
- Ponta de Sao Lourenco - Ponta de São Lorenço is the easternmost point of the island. The area around Caniçal and São Lorenço has a climate similar to that of the island of Porto Santo. It is noticeable that the natural vegetation is different here. The north and south coasts can be seen simultaneously. On a clear day, Porto Santo can also be seen. Beautiful rock formations can be found in this region, and one of the coastal plants is the ice plant.
