Setting Sail on the São Francisco River

Our adventure began bright and early, as we set off from our hotel at 6:30 am, eager to explore the marvels of the São Francisco River Canyon. The excitement was palpable as we boarded the Catamaran Rei do Cangaço, our vessel for the day. With the sun rising over the horizon, the river shimmered like a sea of diamonds, setting the perfect backdrop for our family adventure.

Our guide, a local expert, regaled us with tales of the canyon’s formation, a result of the damming of the river for the Xingó Hydroelectric Plant. The kids were fascinated by the story of how the “hinterland became the sea,” and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the natural beauty surrounding us. As we cruised along, the towering rock walls of the canyon loomed above, their majestic presence a testament to the power of nature.

Discovering Hidden Canyons

Our first stop was the Hidden Canyons, a secluded spot that felt like a secret world waiting to be discovered. Our boatman, Cícero, was a warm and welcoming presence, allowing us to soak in the tranquility of the surroundings. The kids were thrilled to explore the nooks and crannies of the canyon, their imaginations running wild with tales of hidden treasures and ancient mysteries.

The crystal-clear waters of Velho Chico beckoned us for a swim, and we couldn’t resist the temptation. The water was refreshing, and the experience of swimming amidst such breathtaking scenery was nothing short of magical. It was a moment of pure joy and connection, a reminder of the simple pleasures that family travel can bring.

A Splash of Adventure at Castanho

Our final destination was Castanho, a lively spot with plenty of activities to keep the whole family entertained. While the area reserved for swimming in the river was unfortunately not at its best that day, the infinity pool more than made up for it. For a small fee, we gained access to the pool, where the kids spent hours splashing around and making new friends.

The highlight of Castanho, however, was undoubtedly the 10-meter-high trampoline next to the pool. Watching my kids muster the courage to take the leap was a proud mom moment, and their squeals of delight as they plunged into the river were music to my ears. The efficient team of waiters ensured we were well-fed and hydrated, making the day a stress-free experience for all.

As we made our way back to the hotel, tired but happy, I couldn’t help but reflect on the day’s adventures. The São Francisco River Canyon had offered us a perfect blend of natural beauty, adventure, and family bonding. It was a day filled with laughter, exploration, and memories that we would cherish for years to come.
