Sailing into Nostalgia: A Vintage Voyage from Cannes
Drawn by the allure of a vintage sailboat and the promise of a leisurely day at sea, I set out from Cannes to explore the enchanting Sainte-Marguerite Island. Join me as I recount a journey filled with nostalgia, adventure, and the timeless beauty of the Mediterranean.
Setting Sail from Cannes
The sun was just beginning to cast its golden glow over the Old Port of Cannes as I arrived, eager to embark on a journey that promised to be both nostalgic and invigorating. The vintage sailboat, an 8-meter Jeanneau Sangria, stood gracefully at the dock, its polished wood gleaming in the morning light. As a retired journalist with a penchant for the romance of travel, I was immediately drawn to the vessel’s timeless charm.
Maxime, our gracious host and captain, welcomed us aboard with a warm smile. His passion for sailing was infectious, and as we set sail towards Sainte-Marguerite Island, I felt a familiar thrill akin to the gentle rumble of a train departing a station. The sea breeze was a refreshing companion, and the rhythmic lapping of the waves against the hull was a soothing melody that transported me back to the leisurely journeys of my youth.
Exploring Sainte-Marguerite Island
Upon reaching the island, we anchored and disembarked to explore its natural beauty. The island, part of the Lérins archipelago, was a verdant oasis, offering a serene escape from the bustling mainland. I took a leisurely stroll along the trails, my mind wandering to the stories of the past that these ancient paths must hold.
Maxime had prepared a delightful picnic, featuring homemade anchoïade and fromage blanc, accompanied by a basket of fresh vegetables and a crisp rosé wine. As we dined, the gentle sway of the boat and the distant call of seabirds created a scene reminiscent of a painting from a bygone era. It was a moment to savor, much like the slow, scenic train rides I often write about.
After lunch, we donned diving masks and ventured into the crystal-clear waters to discover the underwater sculptures. The experience was both exhilarating and tranquil, a perfect blend of adventure and reflection. The harbor showers awaited us upon our return, offering a refreshing end to our aquatic exploration.
Sailing Back to Cannes
As we set sail back to Cannes, the wind picked up, and Maxime invited us to participate in maneuvering the sailboat. Under his expert guidance, we harnessed the wind’s power, and the boat surged forward with a grace that mirrored the elegance of a steam locomotive gliding along its tracks.
The return journey offered a new perspective of the coastline, with the sun dipping towards the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a fitting end to a day that had been both a journey through the present and a nostalgic nod to the past.
Back at the port, as I stepped off the sailboat, I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude. The Vintage Sailboat Tour had been a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and nostalgia—a reminder of the beauty of slow travel and the timeless allure of the sea.
