Embracing Serendipity: A Glacier Adventure in Canterbury
When a canceled tour led me to the Mount Cook Combo Tour, I discovered an unforgettable adventure. Join me as I recount the breathtaking experience of exploring the Tasman Glacier by ski plane and helicopter, and the unexpected joy of embracing the unknown.
A Serendipitous Adventure
Sometimes, the best experiences are those that come unexpectedly. My journey to Canterbury was initially planned around a different tour, but fate had other plans. When my original booking was canceled due to low numbers, I found myself at the desk of Inflite, where Jess, a delightful and accommodating staff member, offered me a spot on the Mount Cook Combo Tour. Little did I know, this change of plans would lead to one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life.
The Mount Cook Combo Tour is a unique opportunity to explore the breathtaking Tasman Glacier from both a ski plane and a helicopter. With a maximum of five people per aircraft, the experience is intimate and personal. I opted to ascend the glacier in the ski plane, eager to experience the thrill of a ski landing. As we soared over the Tasman Valley, our pilot, Dan, pointed out the stunning landscapes and shared insights about the region’s natural wonders. The flight was a mere 20 minutes, but the views were nothing short of spectacular.
The Majesty of the Glacier
Landing on the Tasman Glacier was an awe-inspiring moment. The vast expanse of ice stretched out before us, a pristine white canvas under the clear blue sky. We had 10-15 minutes to explore, take photographs, and absorb the serene beauty of our surroundings. The silence of the glacier was profound, broken only by the occasional crunch of snow underfoot. It was a reminder of the delicate balance of nature and the importance of preserving such untouched landscapes.
As someone who has spent years advocating for sustainable tourism, I was heartened to see the care and respect with which Inflite conducted the tour. The aircraft were shut down during our time on the glacier, allowing us to fully appreciate the tranquility of the environment. It was a testament to the company’s commitment to minimizing their ecological footprint while providing an unforgettable experience.
A Flight to Remember
After our time on the glacier, it was time to switch to the helicopter for the return journey. The transition was seamless, and soon we were airborne once more, this time with a bird’s-eye view of the majestic Aoraki/Mt. Cook. The helicopter offered a different perspective, allowing us to appreciate the scale and grandeur of the landscape below.
The professionalism and expertise of the Inflite team were evident throughout the tour. From the knowledgeable pilots to the attentive staff, every aspect of the experience was meticulously planned and executed. It was clear that they shared my passion for conservation and were dedicated to showcasing the natural beauty of New Zealand in a responsible and sustainable manner.
Reflecting on this adventure, I am grateful for the unexpected turn of events that led me to the Mount Cook Combo Tour. It was a reminder of the wonders that await when we embrace the unknown and allow ourselves to be guided by the serendipity of travel. If you find yourself in Canterbury, I wholeheartedly recommend this tour. And if you do, be sure to say “Hi” to Jess from Jeff, as a small token of appreciation for the kindness and joy she brings to every traveler she meets.
