- Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge - Our tour starts in La Fortuna at 7:30 am. On the way to Caño Negro you will have the opportunity to learn about numerous agricultural plantations of Costa Rica such as yucca, papaya, pineapple, sugar cane and oranges.
Then we will arrive at the “El Caiman” restaurant, where we will enjoy a welcome drink and snack, before the boat tour on the “Rio Frio” river.
Here we will have 2.5 hours to see egrets, herons, monkeys, caimans, iguanas, bats and a variety of flora.
An excellent Costa Rican typical meal will be waiting for us, back at El Caiman Restaurant and while we have lunch, we can talk about the unforgettable experiences on the river.

Unique Caño Negro is one of the most amazing trips for incredible birdwatching in Costa Rica.
Our tour starts in La Fortuna at 7:30 am. On the way to Caño Negro you will have the opportunity to learn about numerous agricultural plantations of Costa Rica such as yucca, papaya, pineapple, sugar cane and oranges.
Then we will arrive at the ‘El Caiman’ restaurant, where we will enjoy a welcome drink and snack, before the boat tour on the ‘Rio Frio’ river.
Here we will have 2 hours to see egrets, herons, monkeys, caimans, iguanas, bats and a variety of flora.
An excellent Costa Rican typical meal will be waiting for us, back at El Caiman Restaurant and while we have lunch, we can talk about the unforgettable experiences on the river.

Cool experience down the Rio Frio on Cano Negro Tour. Ask for Roy and Alex! - Great time with Roy and Alex.
Thanks to Eagle-Eyes and Domingo.
First time using my CoolPix 950 super zoom camera. Worked great, Roy was using his 1000, so everyone was in the same page with getting close and steadying the boat. We saw 3 types of moneys, large iguana, different lizards, tons of birds, caymen (like alligator or croc), turtles. It’s a long day on the Cano Negro tour. They have cold water and juices on the boat. You get choice of lunch. Roy shared his knowledge on the 1 hr 45 minute drive from La Fortuna. Learned some about Costa-Rican culture. Roy has jokes. 😂

Wonderful experience. - What a great experience, from start to finish. The staff, Jason and Roy were excellent. The boat driver spotted things we never would seen. It was a long ride from LaFortuna, but well worth it. We saw quite a bit of wildlife, which was our main goal. They started with fresh fruit and beverages, then a couple of hours on the river. After they served one of the best Cassado lunches we had on our entire trip. As a bonus, we had a great surprise stop, which I will not give away, but great fun. I highly recommend this excursion.

Fantastic - Fantastic wildlife boat trip with guide David. Recorded 20 bird species, three species of monkeys, turtles, bats, iguanas and Cayman. David also provided wonderful photographs taken through the spotting scope. The lunch following was also excellent as was the sugar cane and cacao visit in the afternoon. Highly recommended.

Best Costa Rica wildlife tour!! - The tour was exceptional! Highly recommend for anyone that wants to see a huge variety of wildlife including monkeys, caiman, birds, and more. Roy, Alex, and Max went above and beyond to make sure the tour was special. Also Roy made it super fun and super informative at the same time. Will do again if we return - ¡Muchas gracias! Loads of wildlife seen - We were collected from our hotel ant 0750hrs and taken to the tour office where there were toilets and we were offered free coffee. We set off on route to the river just after 8am and I would say the trip took just shy of two hours to get there. It’s a long way but I think it’s well worth doing, we were offered fruit juice and fruit on arrival and then we got on the boat, we were on the water for around 2 hours and we saw so many animals. We saw cayman, turtles, Iguanas, loads of different birds and monkeys. When we came back in we had a lovely traditional lunch followed by ice cream, it was a very enjoyable day and I can recommend.

Lots of wildlife! - Lots of wildlife - monkeys, caimans, birds! Roy and his teammates did a great job finding and getting us close to multiple species examples. Roy even shared his excellent photos with us on WhatsApp. Good food, too! Really glad we took this excursion from La Fortuna.

Fantastic trip to see wildlife on a river without crowds of other boats - Fantastic day out. From the very start of the river cruise, we sore amazing wildlife.
Probably spent 10 mins just meters away from where we had come refreshments. With only 3 boats in total, which we never saw again while cruising, it really felt special and unspoiled. The whole team was brilliant. From the driver, restaurant team, captain, and our 2 guides. Their spotting and knowledge of wildlife were impressive. Getting some additional photos taken by them was icing on the cake. We've done 4 wildlife tours so far in Costa Rica, and this was the best.

Amazing tour for wildlife - Amazing tour on Rio Frio in the Caño Negro reserve. We saw do many monkeys, caimans, birds & other animals. The guides & drivers made sure we all had chances to see everything & talked a lot about the agriculture of Costa Rica on our drive to the reserve. Our driver was Alex, our guide was Jason & our boat driver was Max. The lunch afterwards was tasty. Bring binoculars!

Mixed feelings - Well worn stretch of river. Electric drifting platforms would provide a better environment for both wildlife and visitors. The 2 hour road trip from La Fortuna is ok, but with an awful final 15 minutes of terrible bumpy track. Fairly inexpensive. Friendly, knowledgeable guides. I suppose if you're a serious birder you might tick off a few species.
