Whether viewed as solo guardians or solitary beacons, lighthouses serve as romantic symbols of our victory over the powerful seas. The seashore lighthouses in New Jersey are particularly renowned for numerous reasons, such as their contribution to thriving ports like Philadelphia and strategic significance during war periods. These nautical towers have been instrumental in protecting countless lives throughout history and continue to do so every day.
In addition to gracing our coastlines, these lighthouses also ornament our inland water bodies. They were built in the 19th and early 20th centuries to support ships navigating the dangerous mid-channel of Delaware Bay. While most of these lighthouses are still in operation today, they’ve all been automated. Positioned on pedestals and surrounded by water, they’re often hidden from the view of land. The Cape May Whale Watcher has been conducting journeys to these incredibly historic lighthouses since 1994.
