- Cape Town Central - Heading east from Cape Town, we will pass through some of the city’s and South Africa’s most renowned townships en route to the wine country. The first stop is Langa, the oldest township in South Africa, established in 1823. Unlike other informal settlements, Langa is well-developed and has seen significant economic growth over the years. Notable new industries include ceramic manufacturing, traditional South African bistros, and film production. The movie ‘Safe House’ starring Denzel Washington was filmed here. It takes about 50-60 minutes to drive to our first wine destination, Delaire Graff Estate on Helshoogte Road.
- Groot Drakenstein Prison - Nelson Mandela spent the final 14 months of his long political imprisonment at Drakenstein Prison, formerly known as Victor Verster. Mandela referred to it as a “gilded cage,” where he was housed in luxurious quarters rather than a cell. He had access to multiple bedrooms, a swimming pool, a personal chef, and stunning views of the Drakenstein Mountains, but he was still a prisoner. This period marked the end of Mandela’s incarceration before he was finally freed in February 1990 after decades of struggle.
- Franschhoek - We’ll stop in Franschhoek Town, which means “French Corner” in English, for lunch. Franschhoek is one of South Africa’s oldest towns, featuring centuries-old vineyards and Cape Dutch architecture. Known as the heart of food and wine in the country, Franschhoek is set in one of the world’s most beautiful wine valleys. At the end of the main road stands the 17th and 18th-century Huguenot Monument, honoring the French settlers who arrived here. We will have 1 hour for lunch before moving on to our final wine estate.
