- Cape Town Central - Departing from Cape Town and heading eastward, our excursion into the renowned wine regions will lead us through some of the most famous townships in Cape Town and South Africa. The first, Langa, holds the distinction of being the oldest township in the country, established in 1823. Unlike other informal settlements in South Africa, Langa boasts a well-developed infrastructure and a thriving local economy that has grown robustly over time. Key industries that have emerged here include ceramics production, authentic South African eateries, and the film industry. The well-known film ‘Safe House’ starring Denzel Washington was shot here. The drive to our initial wine destination, Zevenwacht Wine Estate, will take approximately 45 to 60 minutes.
- Zevenwacht Cellar & Vineyards - Our first stop is at the award-winning Zevenwacht Wine Estate, where we’ll indulge in a wine and cheese pairing complemented by a cellar tour. It’s an ideal way to begin your day on the wine route.
- Stellenbosch - We’ll make our way to the quaint yet bustling town of Stellenbosch, the second oldest European settlement in South Africa after Cape Town. The area is celebrated for cultivating a diverse array of grape varieties, such as chenin blanc, shiraz, pinotage, and méthode cap classique used in sparkling wines. Take in the historic Cape Dutch architecture, ancient water channels, and over 300-year-old oak trees that evoke the charm of a bygone era. Dorp Street is particularly noteworthy for having the longest row of historic buildings in the Southern Hemisphere. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the town on foot and receive an orientation from your guide, lasting around 40 minutes.
- Marianne Wine Estate - Next, we’ll visit the historic Huguenot village of Franschhoek. Here, you can engage in the town’s rich tradition of artisanal food with a wine and biltong pairing at Marianne Wine Estate, all while enjoying the picturesque views of the surrounding landscape. The journey to this estate should take about an hour.
- Paarl - Our journey continues as we drive towards Franschhoek Town, passing by lush plantations and taking in the stunning views of the Simonsberg mountain range for approximately one hour.
- Franschhoek - We’ll make a stop in Franschhoek, also known as the ‘French Corner,’ for lunch. This is one of the oldest towns in South Africa, with historic vineyards and Cape Dutch architecture. Franschhoek is also celebrated as the epicenter of gourmet food and wine in the country and is nestled in one of the world’s most beautiful wine valleys. At the end of the main road, you’ll find the Huguenot Monument, which commemorates the French settlers who arrived in the 17th and 18th centuries. We’ll allocate one hour for lunch before proceeding to our final wine estate.
- Franschhoek - After lunch, travelers will embark on the Franschhoek Wine Tram for the last tasting at Rickety Bridge, a winery steeped in tradition. Dating back to 1797, the estate has been handed down to its present owner, Duncan Spence, who has been at the helm since 2000.
- Groot Drakenstein Prison - Formerly known as Victor Verster Prison, this facility was the last place of incarceration for the late Nelson Mandela during the final fourteen months of his political imprisonment. Mandela described it as a ‘gilded cage,’ a mix of luxury and restriction. Instead of a cell, Mandela was housed in a comfortable villa complete with multiple bedrooms, a swimming pool, a personal chef, and a breathtaking view of the Drakenstein Mountains. This marked his final period of imprisonment before he was released in February 1990.
