Highlights
  • Robben Island Museum - Robben Island is a prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his 27 years in prison in a tiny cell during the apartheid era. Today, the island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-visit destination for anyone interested in South African history. Tours to the island begin with multimedia exhibits in the museum at the Nelson Mandela Gateway Victoria and Alfred Waterfront before travelers hop aboard to the island. The boat trip takes about 30 minutes to an hour depending on weather conditions. The tour guide/driver will not be joining you on the boat trip to the island as there will be a tour guide; former political prisoner on the island who will give you a guided tour. Your tour guide/driver will be waiting to welcome you back at the port.
  • Guga s’Thebe - This is an art and culture Centre run by the government in order to help and train the local community on skills such as art, music and dance. When visiting the crafter studios you can browse collections of locally sewn products, pottery, beading, and mosaic works. You can also enjoy drumming performances.
  • Guguletu - Gugulethu is known for the incident involving the Gugulethu seven. Seven young men who were members of uMkhonto weSizwe (MK), the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC), were ambushed and killed by the South African security forces on the morning of March 3rd, 1986 during apartheid. The Gugulethu Seven Memorial was built to commemorate the life and death of those activists.
