Highlights
  • Robben Island Museum - In 1999, Robben Island was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Located 12 kilometers off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa, Robben Island was home to a maximum-security prison for decades. Political prisoners, including the father of democracy and others, were incarcerated there during the apartheid era.
  • Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden - In May 1913, the government designated the state of Kirstenbosch for the establishment of a national botanical garden and agreed to contribute 1000 opera annually. The Botanical Society was formed on 10 June 1913 and held its first general meeting on 31 July 1913.
  • Groot Constantia - In 1685, during an annual visit to the Cape, Hendrik Adriaan Van Rheede to Drakenstein granted the grounds of Groot Constantia to Simon Van der Stel, the first governor of the Cape of Good Hope.
