Visitors are invited to view the compelling 25-minute film Nelson Mandela: A Righteous Man, which is a permanent fixture at the museum. The film is included in the admission fee and serves as a fitting conclusion to a visit to the museum.
Established by Mendel Kaplan, the South African Jewish Museum was inaugurated by the former president Nelson Mandela in 2000. Despite its recent inception, the museum boasts a rich historical background, including the notable fact that it is located in South Africa’s earliest synagogue, constructed in 1863. The museum’s purpose is to meticulously document the narrative of South Africa’s Jewish population. This encompasses the community’s ancestral origins in Lithuania and other regions, its pivotal role in the development of South Africa’s democracy, and its significant contributions to modern society.
