Savoring Salt Spring: A Journey on the Artisan Trail
When the waves are calm, I seek out new adventures. The Salt Spring Island Artisan Trail Tour promised a day of indulgence and discovery, and it delivered in spades. Join me as I explore the island’s finest artisanal offerings, from cheese farms to craft breweries.
Setting Sail on the Artisan Trail
As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours chasing waves and exploring the vibrant beach towns of Central America. But every now and then, I find myself drawn to experiences that take me away from the ocean’s embrace and into the heart of local culture. That’s how I ended up on Salt Spring Island, embarking on the Artisan Trail Tour.
The Artisan Trail Tour is a hop-on-hop-off adventure that takes you through a scenic 28km loop, showcasing the island’s finest artisanal offerings. From award-winning cheeseries to craft breweries, wineries, and cider works, this tour promised a day of indulgence and discovery. And with Elton, one of the owners, as our guide, I knew we were in for a treat.
Our journey began at the Salt Spring Island Cheese farm, where we were greeted by the delightful aroma of freshly made cheese. As we sampled a variety of cheeses paired with chutneys and preserves, I couldn’t help but appreciate the craftsmanship that went into each bite. The self-guided tour around the farm and goat barn was a charming touch, allowing us to witness the cheese-making process up close.
A Toast to Local Flavors
Next on our itinerary was the Salt Spring Brewing Co., nestled against a forested mountain. As someone who appreciates the art of brewing, I was eager to taste their small-batch beers crafted from mountain spring water. The raspberry mango sour ale was a refreshing surprise, while the creme brulee vanilla stout offered a rich, velvety finish. Elton’s insights into the brewing process added depth to our tasting experience, making it all the more memorable.
Our adventure continued at the Garry Oaks Estate Winery, a stunning property overlooking the Burgoyne Valley. The estate’s award-winning wines were a testament to the island’s fertile soil and sustainable practices. As I sipped on a glass of Gewürztraminer, I found myself lost in the beauty of the surrounding landscape, with its majestic Garry Oaks and tranquil pond.
Cider and Lavender Dreams
Our final stop was the Ciderworks, where we were introduced to the world of organic craft cider. With over 425 heritage apple varieties grown on-site, the cider here was unlike anything I’d tasted before. The apple fritters and artisan pizza were the perfect accompaniment, rounding out our culinary journey on a high note.
Before heading back to Ganges Harbour, we made a quick detour to the Sacred Mountain Lavender farm. The sight of 2.5 acres of blooming lavender was a feast for the senses, and the farm shop offered a delightful array of lavender-infused products. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.
As we sailed back to our starting point, I couldn’t help but reflect on the day’s adventures. The Artisan Trail Tour had offered a glimpse into the heart of Salt Spring Island, showcasing its rich tapestry of flavors and craftsmanship. For anyone looking to experience the island’s artisanal spirit, this tour is an absolute must.
