Highlights
  • Caherconnell Stone Fort is a well-preserved stone ringfort located 1km south of the Poulnabrone dolmen in the heart of Burren, Ireland. This fort remains in its untouched state and its geography, overlooking the majority of the surrounding areas, implies it was intended for defensive purposes. Each summer, ‘CAFS’ - the Caherconnell Archaeological Field School, which is accredited by NUI, Galway - conducts archaeological excavations. Visitors, apart from exploring the Fort, can watch Burren’s top Sheepdog Demonstrations at Caherconnell. Here, one can admire the teamwork between the farmer and the border collie as they operate in Burren’s natural landscape. Information about demonstration timings can be found on our website.

Excellent history talk; don’t miss the dogs! - The guide that showed us around the stone fort was very informative. She shared all kinds of history about the fort as well as details about ongoing archaeology explorations. The sheepdogs were marvelous! One of the dogs was having trouble concentrating and this added a bit of humor. (It also made me feel better about my own dogs and their manners.) Every staff member was friendly. All animals are well cared for.

Great experience for adults and children, in the heart of the Burren. - The Caherconnell Stone Fort and Sheepdog demonstration is wonderful for people of all ages. We were there with our adult children and grands. Everyone loved the sheepdog demonstration, it was informative and entertaining. There is a 45 minute tour of the stone fort with an archeologist or archeologist student that was fascinating. If you approach the place from the north you will drive through a very scenic part of the Burren.

Great stop on the Burren - History and animals all in one place - This was an exceptional part of our day! Two amazing activities on the same property. History, conservation, farming, sheep and sheepherding.... with a cafe and gift shop. All in one spot. Amazing:-)

Perfect for children - Our children (5,10 and 13) loved the show. We've learned an awful lot. The highlight for the children was petting the dogs. Our youngest wanted to take one right away. Great activity for kids.

Sheepdog Demonstration that will be a highlight of your trip!! - This was a highlight of our vacation. The sheepdog demonstration was an Amazing experience - educational, fun, and entertaining (Jess dog!). The herdsman was a wonderful young man - knowledgeable, personable, and funny. He stayed and answered everyone's questions. I have border collies and I am a vet and learned some new things. It is well worth making this a stop on any Ireland vacation or day trip. They have a Cafe with good food (shops, sandwiches, sweets) and a lovely gift so as well (lots of sheep themed gifts). We arrived a little early so had time to shop. Watch the demonstration, and eat lunch. We saw the sign along the road and followed it in. We are so glad we did!!
