Highlights
  • Caherconnell Stone Fort & Sheepdog Demonstrations - Caherconnell Stone Fort, situated 1km south of Poulnabrone dolmen in the heart of the Burren Ireland, offers you the opportunity to visit an exceptionally well - preserved example of the stone forts or stone ringforts which are to be found in the Burren Ireland. The fort is in its original state. Its position, overlooking virtually all-surrounding areas suggests a defensive settlement. Archaeological excavations take place each summer in association with ‘CAFS’ - Caherconnell Archaeological Field School- an International Field School accredited by NUI, Galway. As well as a trip to the Fort, visitors can also take in the Burren’s Premier Sheepdog Demonstrations at Caherconnell, enjoying the combined skills of the farmer and the border collie as they work in the natural habitat of the Burren. History brought to life.. Fantastic day! - Wonderful way to spend midday.Pat gave an informational and humorous tour of 3000 years of historical fort , he really brought the story to life. John gave a sheepdog demonstration on how dogs are trained to herd, it was splendid, the dogs, especially Sally, were a joy to watch .This 30 minute drive from Doolin en route to Galway was a favorite. Did I mention the gift shop and cafe ? You feel like family .

Must do on way to cliffs of moher - Highly recommend you stop here on your way to or from the cliffs of moher. Educational and entertaining. Amazing to watch the sheep herding dogs do their work and see their different personalities. The shepherd who presented was funny and I learned a lot. A bus arrived and was at the same presentation as us but there was plenty of room for everyone. It’s extremely well run and well presented. After we did a tour of the 1,000+ year old ring fort which was really interesting. Our guide had been an archeologist on the dig and her enthusiasm for the subject matter was apparent. Definitely worth the stop!

Great historical site for learning about the history of the Burren - The fort sits in a lovely spot in the Burren making its long-standing historical significance to area unsurprising. Fascinating site (with active archeological digs) that helped to learn so much more about Irish history. I greatly enjoyed the guided tour; our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. The visitors' centre at the fort has good bathrooms and food.

Amazing sheepdog demo - I was so excited to see the sheep dog demo. The trainer was funny and so good with the dogs and the visitors. We were amazed at the skill level of the dogs. It was on my bucket list of things to do in Ireland and you didn't disappoint. We enjoyed tasty soup and sandwiches after the demo. The gift shop is lovely. Beautiful facility.

Dogs, Fort, Cafe and gift shop all in one stop - We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Caherconnell. Touring the fort was interesting but seeing the dogs work was amazing. I loved that they all had their own personalities and were so well trained. Really impressive and fun! Had lunch at the excellent cafe as well.
