Strange, but cool. - Very fun. It’s kind of a weird feeling, for sure. Not recommended for the claustrophobic or agoraphobic. Luckily, I am neither.

Wonderful experience! - I had such a great time! Our guide Alexandra was so sweet and helpful. The only last minute change was the pickup. I was staying at the Nacar by Hilton and the roads were too tiny for the bus to pick us up. So we had to meet up with them at a local tourist area but they were very responsive, accommodating, and so helpful with the pickup change and drop off! The entire experience was amazing and I would do it again. I highly recommend!

A very different, but fun time. - Kinda like every little kid’s dream. It’s just mud though - not necessarily therapeutic or anything. That said, it was definitely different and lots of fun. If you don’t want to get hit up at the end by insistent people, turn down attempts at massaging you in there. Then again, why would you? Feels great. The lady who massaged me followed me into the lake to help me wash off all the mud. She was very nice, and worked hard. I don’t remember what I gave her, but she had a number in mind and made no bones about asking for it. (Supposed to be a tip, esp. given nothing was spoken about a charge).

Lets Get Muddy - Natalia also known as Alice was a great tour guide. Very knowledgeable about each spot we visited and I could tell the locals enjoy her as well. She speaks great English and Spanish. Our first spot was at the salt museum which was very interesting and informative. The guide that worked with Natalia was friendly and knowledgeable as well. We were even able to get a bag of salt and keep it. The next stop was the Pink Sea where we were able to take pictures and walk around. The Mud Volcano was the next stop and was a great experience. When we first got there, Natalia advised, “not to give the tips directly to the people”. She also stated, “ give tips to her to hand out to avoid confusion.” Even though we did that there was still confusion and the locals were at bus asking for tips in hand, so not only did we give tips to Natalia, we still ended up giving the locals tips in their hand. My tip to avoid the confusion is to bring small bills to give to at least four people( the people who take your pictures, hold your shoes, the massager and the person who washed you) instead of big bills like we did, expecting them to split the tip’s Amongst themselves. Or you can choose for no help, keep you belongings in the lockers and hold on to your tip money but it is always good to support the locals. The last stop was at Zona Norte for lunch where we could choose chicken or fish. The fish, coconut rice and lemonade was very tasty. It even came with a salad and plantain.

No pink sea but foam and mud - The sea hasn’t been pink for over 8 months. Will the condition for the algae to become pink again come back? Who knows. The sea wasn’t pink, but it was foaming and we with the strong wind it was interesting to see. Mud was very fun

Mud Volcano- Incredibly dangerous!! - I took a private taxi from the hotel to visit the mud volcano and the pink ocean. The total cost was 200,000 pesos for 2 people total, not each. We drove about an hour towards Barranquilla and turned onto an unmarked road. At the end there was a 40 foot mound of mud with the most dangerous stairs in the world. Some of the steps were 2 1/2 to 3 feet and at the top it was almost straight up. The mud is 2,300 meters deep and you float. The staff was very helpful and the took pictures with your own phone while you were in the mud. You could even get a massage in the mud. Once done, you exited the pit covered in super slick mud. You then had to climb down the stars without slipping and killing yourself. It was so difficult most people came down on their bottom. After you got down you could rinse off in the lagoon or use a regular shower. Admission was 20,000 pesos and you tipped the assistant 10,000 pesos for taking pictures. The massage was 20,000 pesos. Unfortunately the pink sea wasn't pink! Apparently that only happens at certain times of the year. June is not one of them. Instead, we went to the beach directly behind the Melia Cartagena Karmairi. Nice beach with tents where you can order fried fish and sit under a private tent and eat. Very enjoyable.
