Island Hopping Bliss: A Day of Adventure in Cartagena’s Waters
When the allure of the Colombian Caribbean called, I couldn’t resist the chance to explore the Rosario and Tierra Bomba Islands. With promises of snorkeling, vibrant island parties, and the magic of bioluminescent plankton, this full-day tour was an adventure I had to experience firsthand.
Setting Sail from Cartagena
The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I made my way to the Pegasus dock in Cartagena. The statues of winged horses stood majestically, casting long shadows on the cobblestones. I was about to embark on the Five Islands Tour, a full-day adventure that promised to be as thrilling as it was relaxing. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours in the ocean, but the allure of exploring new waters never fades. Our guide, Alex, greeted us with a warm smile and a promise of an unforgettable day.
We set off promptly at 8:30 a.m., the boat cutting through the gentle waves as we headed towards our first stop, the historic Fuerte de San Fernando de Bocachica. The sight of the ancient forts, standing as silent sentinels over the channel, was a reminder of the rich history that permeates this region. It was a perfect start to the day, blending the thrill of the open sea with a touch of cultural exploration.
Island Hopping and Snorkeling Adventures
Our next destination was Isla Grande, where the promise of snorkeling in crystal-clear waters awaited. As someone who has spent a lifetime chasing waves, the opportunity to explore the underwater world was irresistible. The coral reefs were teeming with small fish, their vibrant colors a stark contrast to the deep blue of the ocean. While the marine life wasn’t as abundant as some other spots I’ve visited, the tranquility of floating above the reef was a reward in itself.
After snorkeling, we made our way to a private island for some much-needed relaxation. Lounging on a sunbed with a shrimp cocktail in hand, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of contentment. The turquoise waters lapped gently at the shore, and the sun warmed my skin as I drifted into a blissful state of island-induced relaxation.
The Magic of Bioluminescent Plankton
As the day began to wind down, we headed to Isla Cholón, a vibrant hub of music and laughter. The party atmosphere was infectious, and I found myself dancing on the deck of our boat, surrounded by fellow adventurers. Vendors lined the beach, offering everything from handmade crafts to refreshing drinks. A word to the wise: bring pesos, as card payments come with a hefty tax.
Our final stop was Playa Blanca, where we waited for nightfall to witness the bioluminescent plankton. As darkness enveloped the beach, we were guided to a secluded lagoon. The water shimmered with an ethereal glow, each movement causing the plankton to light up like stars in the night sky. It was a surreal experience, one that left me in awe of the ocean’s wonders.
As we made our way back to Cartagena, the memories of the day played back in my mind like a favorite surf film. The Five Islands Tour had delivered on its promise of adventure and relaxation, leaving me with a renewed appreciation for the beauty of the Caribbean. If you’re ever in Cartagena, I highly recommend setting sail on this unforgettable journey.
