From Surf to Summit: A Day at Irazu Volcano and Beyond
When the mountains call, even a surfer must answer. With just one day to explore the Central Valley, the Irazu Volcano Day Tour promised a break from the usual beachside adventures. Join me as I trade the surf for the heights of Irazu and the charms of Cartago and Orosi.
Above the Clouds at Irazu
As a seasoned traveler and wave chaser, I often find myself drawn to the ocean’s edge, but every now and then, the call of the mountains beckons. This time, it was the Irazu Volcano that lured me away from the surf. My wife and I had just one day to explore the Central Valley, and the Irazu Volcano Day Tour seemed like the perfect escape from the usual beachside haunts.
Our guide, Oscar, picked us up from our hotel in San Jose, and we set off on a journey that promised a variety of sights and experiences. As we drove through the city, Oscar pointed out landmarks, including a brief stop at the National Theatre. The drive to Irazu was nothing short of spectacular, taking us above the clouds and offering glimpses of Cartago and the eerie deserted hospital below.
Upon reaching Irazu National Park, we were given time to explore the craters. The landscape was otherworldly, with a small lake nestled in one of the craters and vibrant flora dotting the terrain. The weather was a mix of sun and clouds, creating an atmospheric backdrop that added to the mystique of the place. We then ascended to the highest point of Irazu, where the view of the craters below was breathtaking, even as the clouds played hide and seek with the scenery.
Cartago’s Charms
Descending from the heights of Irazu, we made our way to Linda Vista, the highest restaurant in Costa Rica. The walls were adorned with business cards, a quirky touch that added character to the place. After a quick stop, we continued to Cartago, where the Basilica of the Angels awaited. The basilica was a masterpiece of art and architecture, with every surface painted in intricate detail and a ceiling that was both unique and captivating.
Cartago’s charm didn’t end there. We visited a viewpoint overlooking the Orosi Valley, a beautifully landscaped area that offered stunning views of the valley below. The historic ruined church at Ujarras was our next stop, a serene and picturesque site that invited quiet reflection. Crossing the dam over Lake Cachi, we took a moment to appreciate the engineering marvel before continuing our journey through the valley.
Orosi’s Timeless Beauty
Our final destination was the quaint town of Orosi, home to the oldest church in Costa Rica still in public use. The church exuded a sense of history and reverence, its walls whispering tales of the past. Orosi itself was a delightful town, with a laid-back vibe that resonated with my surfer soul.
We ended our day with a meal at a local restaurant, savoring the flavors of the region before heading back to our hotel. The Irazu Volcano Day Tour had been a full and fabulous day, a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and a touch of adventure. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best waves aren’t found in the ocean, but in the experiences that take us to new heights.
