Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen
Rabat - This morning, depart around 8 AM for a five-hour journey by minibus to Chefchaouen, the Blue Pearl. Along the way, stop in Rabat, an elegant capital on the Atlantic coast. Visit the city’s most significant monuments, particularly the Hassan Tower and the Kasbah of the Oudaya, a fortress strategically located by the ocean.
Chefchaouen - After lunch in Rabat, continue the drive to the “Blue City.” Arrive in the early evening and check into our Riad in the heart of Chefchaouen’s medina. Depending on our accommodation, the riad—a traditional Moroccan house built around an interior courtyard converted into a comfortable, rustic guesthouse—may feature a hammam (Turkish bath), dining room, and roof terrace with sweeping views of the city and mountainsides. Rooms are typically decorated by local artists. Tonight, you are free to explore at your own pace, browse local shops, enjoy tea in a café, or soak in the Moroccan charm of our riad.
Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen Medina - Today, meet the local guide in Chefchaouen for a unique experience that delights all the senses. The blue and white art painting adorns the walls of houses, buildings, and streets, extending to doors, windows, stairs, electricity poles, and vases decorating the homes’ entrances. When the blue blends with the sky and the fresh water of its waterfalls, the magic is complete. Visit the Kasbah of “Waa’a El-Hamam” square and the Grand Mosque. Enjoy the outdoors at Ras Elma, where locals gather at this cascading waterfall and river, enjoying picnics. Before sunset, a trek to the Spanish Mosque is recommended to witness one of Morocco’s best sunsets. In the evening, explore Chefchaouen by night at your leisure. Perhaps linger over dinner to enjoy the atmosphere, stroll through the medina to shop, or gather in the riad’s courtyard with fellow travelers.
Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Fez
Volubilis - This morning, drive inland to Fez. En route, explore Volubilis, one of the most well-preserved Moorish/Roman cities in North Africa. Led by a local guide, wander among its historic ruins and colorful mosaics. Our guide will help us envision life in ancient times.
Meknes Medina - Set off for a 30-minute drive to Meknes, once home to the Moroccan sultanate. After lunch, continue exploring with a tour of the Old City in Meknes, including the immense stables—a massive structure that once housed 12,000 horses—and granaries built for 17th-century Sultan Moulay Ismail, as well as the beautifully tiled entrance to the Royal Palace.
Medina of Fez - Arrive early afternoon at our Riad in Fez. The evening is free for your own discoveries. Ask your Tour Leader for recommendations if you’d like to experience this city at night.
Fez
Medina of Fez - Today is dedicated to a full-day exploration of Fez. Led by our Tour Leader and a local city guide, leave the 21st century and all previous conceptions of urban design behind as you enter Fez’s medina, often considered the world’s most well-preserved medieval city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s said to be the world’s largest car-free urban area; undistracted by traffic, strolling here is a feast for the senses! Enter via the Bab Boujloud, or “Blue Gate,” and visit the famed Al-Bou Inania Madrasa, the Nejjarine Museum, Seffarine Square, the Chouara Tannery, and the Karaouine Mosque and University, the oldest continuously functioning university in the world, founded in 859 AD. After lunch in the Medina, have an opportunity to visit authentic Moroccan mosaic local craftsmen. The evening is free for your own discoveries. Ask your Tour Leader for recommendations if you’d like to experience this city at night.
Fez, Merzouga Dunes
Medina of Fez - Today, the total transfer time to Merzouga is up to 6 hours, especially in winter when road closures may lead to unexpected detours. We will break up the long transfer with stops along the way.
Ifrane - Pause at Ifrane, a Moroccan ski resort. Then ascend scenic roads past pine groves and giant cedar trees. Midmorning, cross the 6,000-foot pass and continue west toward the great Sahara.
Merzouga Desert - After a lunch break in Midelt, as you approach Merzouga, admire views of the remarkable Ziz Valley. Early afternoon, arrive at the Merzouga Desert dunes. Your Tour Leader will assist in communicating and interacting with the welcoming locals. Later, settle into your Sahara camp, where dunes rise and fall around you, and feel the adventurous spirit of explorers of old. You’ll even have the opportunity to enjoy a camel ride. Witness an incredible sunset, and relax after dinner under a canopy of stars, where (weather permitting) the Milky Way may be clear and bright. At the camp, stay in a walk-in canvas tent, complete with a camp bed, mattress, fresh linens, and pillow, and en suite toilet facilities. There is a separate tent for dining.
Merzouga
Erg Chebbi - Awake amidst the silence of the desert this morning, as Morocco’s natural beauty continues to astound you. After breakfast, absorb the feeling of the remote desert environment and explore where few foreigners venture, along routes known only to the camel and goat-herding Tuareg nomads—the original Morocco travelers. Begin the day by boarding Jeeps for a ride to meet the real Nomads. Here, enjoy a Sirius Adventures-exclusive visit with members of a local desert community in their homes to experience a traditional side of Moroccan life. Our Experience Leader will guide us around many untouched lands of the Sahara desert on a full-day orientation visit. Don’t worry, your Tour Leader knows the area like a lifelong friend!
Khamlia - Later, visit Khamlia, a remote desert village. This region is renowned for the ritual songs of its Gnawa musicians, and we’ll get the chance to hear their melodic chants during a lively performance. Early afternoon, drive back to our Merzouga Riad, check in, and relax in the heart of the dunes for the rest of the evening.
Merzouga, Todra Gorges, Dades Canyons
Gargantas del Todra - Today, leave the open desert behind and set off for the Dades Canyons. En route, stop in Todra for lunch. The real attraction here is the spectacular Todra Gorge, a deep ravine carved by the Todra River over millennia.
Dades Gorges - After lunch, drive to Dades Gorges and check into our guest house. Early afternoon, experience the true atmosphere of the Dades Gorges by visiting them from the inside! Our local guide will take us through this natural wonder. Whether you are a walker or an athlete, a magnificent excursion awaits you in the valley! The Dades Canyon, which has its source in the High Atlas, is the origin of one of the most spectacular canyons in Morocco. The heart of the valley is a true haven of freshness where you will encounter amazing landscapes and interact with a true nomadic family. The valley is covered with exceptionally flourishing nature. (Full equipment provided).
Dades Gorges, Skoura, Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou
Kasbah Amridil - This morning, set off for the fortified kasbah of Ait Ben-Haddou, a 12th-century fortified city and a prime example of classic Southern Moroccan architecture. En route, pause at the Valley of Roses and Amridil Kasbah in Skoura, the first stop on the road of 1000 kasbahs, between Ouarzazate and the Tafilalet region.
Atlas Studios - After lunch in Ouarzazate, join your tour leader for a visit to Atlas Corporation Studios, the first film studios in Morocco, spanning an area of 30 hectares. Many famous films have been shot here, such as The Jewel of the Nile with Michael Douglas, Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves with Fernandel, Gladiator by Ridley Scott, Mission Cleopatra by Alain Chabat, or Babel with Brad Pitt. Part of the Game of Thrones filming even took place here. Your tour leader will share anecdotes about the shootings and help you reach the “César Palace” or the Tibetan temple from the film Kundun by Martin Scorsese.
Ait Ben Haddou - Arrive early afternoon at Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah and take time to join your Tour Leader in a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou, a kasbah or fortified city. Check into our Riad in front of the kasbah and spend the evening as you wish.
Ait Ben Haddou, Tafraout
Tafraoute - Today, leave the High Atlas behind and travel to Tafraout, an Anti-Atlas town in the middle of an Argan forest, land of Igoudars, and a pearl of the south. The evening is free for your own discoveries. Ask your Tour Leader for recommendations if you’d like to experience this city at night.
Tafraout, Amtoudi
Amtoudi - Today, visit Amtoudi, the land of Igoudars. The group will have the opportunity to experience a day in the life of several aspects of the community. Our 4-hour orientation trek will start in the village of Amtoudi. Here, enjoy an S.A.-exclusive visit with members of the local community in their homes to experience a traditional side of Moroccan life. Admire the local architecture, where the experience and materials used fit harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. They reflect a characteristic of Amazigh architecture, distinguished by its thoughtfulness, original features, and respect for the environment. Nowadays, the Igoudars are considered true curiosities and a school of architecture.
Amtoudi - After a picnic lunch, visit one of Morocco’s most special natural sights, the lush Amtoudi Palmeraie Gorges and oases, a kind of miracle, a hymn to life. Each elementary component of existence is magnified. The smallest drop of water is captured, directed into small canals, and flows in the gutters. The air rustles in the fronds cooled in the shade of the palm trees. The neat land. After lunch with Hassan’s family, drive to Napoleon’s Hat Site (le chapeau de Napoléon). Arrive at Tafraout early afternoon, check in, and relax in the authentic city of Tafraout.
Tafraout, Essaouira
Essaouira - This morning, set out for the city of Essaouira. En route, pause at the coast and the delightful resort of Agadir, where you will have the chance to view the beaches of this former fishing village as well as the famous surfing area of Taghazout. Visit the NP Cooperative to view traditional methods of extracting Argan Oil. Arrive early afternoon in Essaouira, check in, and relax in the funky town for the evening. Ask your Tour Leader for recommendations if you’d like to experience this city at night.
Essaouira
Medina of Essaouira - Today, join your local guide for a walk through Essaouira’s medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an excellent example of a fortified African city. Spanish cannons still line the battlements while parasols dot the harbor’s beaches, creating a remarkably picturesque setting. Walk along the city’s ramparts just north of Moulay Hassan Square, where local artists sell their paintings. Continue to the Skala de la Ville, a fortification built along the cliffs that defended the city from sea attacks, now providing visitors with an unparalleled view of the port and its bright-colored fishing boats.
Medina of Essaouira - In the medina, artisans and craftsmen practice their trades as they have for hundreds of years. Explore the many souks in the medina, including the spice and jewelry souks. Visit a jewelry shop renowned for its quality and design. Browse the extensive collection of uniquely handcrafted silver jewelry and watch artisans create beautiful silver pieces.
Essaouira, Marrakesh
Medina of Marrakesh - Today, bid farewell to the Atlantic Ocean as you embrace a picturesque journey to Marrakech. Discover historic and exotic Marrakesh today. Begin at the Koutoubia, a 12th-century mosque and minaret, one of the oldest Moroccan mosques now in existence. Then, explore Bahia Palace, where 360 rooms form a symphony of tales of love and engineering mixed with Italian marble and Sudanese gold. For more recent fascinating finds, see the richly decorated tombs of the Saadi Dynasty. End your thrilling evening in the famed Djemaa el Fna square, a dazzling display of acrobats, storytellers, and snake charmers. Marrakech is almost unique as an ancient city that is still vibrant.
