A Journey Through Time: From Casablanca to Fes

Our adventure began in the bustling city of Casablanca, where we were picked up from our hotel and whisked away to the capital city of Rabat. As a family travel writer, I always look for experiences that are both educational and entertaining for the whole family, and this trip did not disappoint. Rabat’s rich history and stunning architecture provided the perfect backdrop for our first day. We explored the medina, marveled at the Royal Palace, and even managed to squeeze in a quick visit to the Hassan Tower. The kids were fascinated by the stories of ancient kings and queens, and I was thrilled to see them so engaged.

From Rabat, we journeyed to Meknes, another imperial city with its own unique charm. The medina here was a maze of narrow streets and bustling markets, and we spent hours wandering through the stalls, sampling local delicacies, and picking up souvenirs. By the time we reached Fes, we were ready for a good night’s sleep in a traditional riad, a charming guesthouse that offered a glimpse into Moroccan culture and hospitality.

Exploring the Heart of Fes

The next day was dedicated to exploring Fes, one of Morocco’s oldest and most fascinating cities. Our local guide led us through the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where we visited the famous Tanneries and the world’s first university, dating back to the 9th century. The kids were particularly intrigued by the vibrant colors and unique smells of the Tanneries, and I was grateful for the opportunity to teach them about the traditional methods of leather production.

We also visited the Quaraouine University, Medersa Attarine, and the Kingdom Palace, each offering a unique insight into Morocco’s rich history and culture. The day was filled with learning and laughter, and by the time we returned to our riad, we were all exhausted but happy.

Into the Sahara: Camel Rides and Starry Nights

The highlight of our trip was undoubtedly the journey into the Sahara Desert. We traveled through the picturesque towns of Ifrane and Azrou, stopping to feed the local monkeys in the cedar forest, much to the delight of the kids. As we made our way to Merzouga, the landscape changed dramatically, and we found ourselves surrounded by the golden sands of the Sahara.

Riding camels through the dunes was an unforgettable experience. The kids giggled with excitement as we made our way to the desert camp, where we were treated to a traditional Berber dinner under the stars. The night was filled with music and storytelling, and as we lay in our tents, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the memories we were creating as a family.

The next morning, we woke early to watch the sunrise over the dunes, a breathtaking sight that left us all in awe. As we made our way back to civilization, I reflected on the incredible journey we had just experienced. From the vibrant cities to the serene desert, Morocco had captured our hearts, and I knew that this was a trip we would never forget.
