Stabiae is among the four towns that were engulfed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, alongside Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Oplontis. This locale is in close proximity to present-day Castellammare di Stabia, in a region known as Varano, roughly 4.5 km southwest of Pompeii.
In 1957, the site was officially designated as a secured archaeological area, and by 1962, a number of the ruins had been unearthed once again.
It is on this very spot that the Roman Pliny the Elder made landfall in a vessel on the eruption day intending to save his town-dwelling friends.
Through the excavations, two notable Roman villas, namely Villa San Marco and Villa Arianna, were uncovered offering frescoes, statues, sculptures, and mosaics akin to those discovered in Pompeii and Herculaneum.
