When I discovered the allure of Monsanto and its historical villages, I knew it was the perfect family adventure. Join me as I explore these enchanting sites with my children, blending history, nature, and fun.
A Journey Back in Time: Exploring Monsanto with My Kids
When I first heard about the Monsanto Adventure and its connection to the “House of the Dragon” series, I knew it was a must-visit for my family. As a travel writer who loves to blend fun with education, I was eager to explore the historical villages of Monsanto, Idanha-a-Velha, and Penha Garcia with my three children. Our guide, Francisco, was a gem from the start, communicating with us before our arrival and even picking us up from our hotel in Lisbon. The drive to Monsanto was long, but the anticipation of what awaited us kept the kids entertained with stories of dragons and knights.
Discovering the Magic of Monsanto
Upon arriving in Monsanto, we were greeted by breathtaking views that seemed to stretch on forever. The village, with its stone houses built into the rocky mountainside, was like stepping into a fairy tale. Francisco’s knowledge of the area was impressive, and he shared stories of the village’s history and its role in the “House of the Dragon” series. My children were captivated, imagining themselves as characters in a medieval adventure. The climb to the top of the village and castle was a bit challenging, but Francisco was patient, allowing us to take breaks and enjoy the scenery. Meeting some of the local residents added a personal touch to our visit, and their warmth and hospitality made us feel right at home.
A Day of Exploration and Learning
After a delightful lunch at Restaurante O Carlos, where the kids enjoyed trying local dishes, we continued our journey to Idanha-a-Velha. Known as an “open-air museum,” this village was a treasure trove of history. Francisco guided us through its ancient streets, pointing out Roman ruins and sharing fascinating tales of the past. The kids were particularly intrigued by the Roman bridge and the stories of its significance in defending Portuguese territory. Our day ended with a visit to Penha Garcia, where we marveled at the Templar Castle and the stunning views of the Ponsul valley. The kids loved exploring the river beach, and it was the perfect way to cool off after a day of adventure. As we headed back to Lisbon, tired but happy, I knew this was a trip we would cherish forever. The blend of history, nature, and family fun made it an unforgettable experience.
