Named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of the Marquess of Lorne, Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883. The lake’s turquoise color is due to rock flour carried by meltwater from the glaciers. Covering 0.8 km², it drains through the 3 km long Louise Creek into the Bow River.

The vivid green color of the water is due to powdered rock from glaciers, reflecting the blue-green spectrum of sunlight. The rock type and quantity in the water cause the color to vary from lake to lake and month to month. Take a short walk around the lake to experience its serene beauty, a memory to cherish forever.

• Natural Bridge - Natural Bridge is an impressive rock formation spanning the Kicking Horse River west of Field. Here, the slower-moving waters from the Field valley flats descend through a canyon to join the Amiskwi River. Sculpted by the erosive forces of rushing water over what was once a waterfall, the Natural Bridge showcases water’s powerful influence in shaping the landscape. Softer rock below the hard limestone eroded more quickly, widening fissures until the water flow was diverted below the outcrop.
