Discovering the Hidden Charms of Lan Ha Bay: A 3-Day Adventure
Eager to explore the less touristy areas of Lan Ha Bay and Ha Long Bay, I embarked on a three-day journey filled with adventure and relaxation. From night kayaking under a starry sky to exploring serene bays, this trip offered a perfect blend of excitement and tranquility.
A Hidden Gem in Lan Ha Bay
As a digital nomad who thrives on discovering lesser-known paths, the allure of Lan Ha Bay and Ha Long Bay was irresistible. I embarked on this three-day, two-night journey with a sense of adventure, eager to explore the less touristy areas of these iconic bays. The trip began with a warm welcome at a homestay nestled in a lush garden setting. The simplicity of the accommodations was charming, offering a clean and comfortable space that instantly put me at ease. The communal dining experience was a delightful surprise, as I shared meals with fellow travelers, including a friendly Australian couple. The food was simple yet delicious, and the relaxed atmosphere made it easy to unwind.
The island bore the scars of a recent typhoon, with visible damage in Cat Ba township and fallen trees in the forest. However, the resilience of the locals was evident in the swift cleanup efforts, and the natural beauty of the landscape remained largely intact. Our guide, Thang, was a gem, providing insightful commentary and ensuring that everyone felt included in the activities. Although the hike to Navi Peak was inaccessible due to cyclone damage, we enjoyed a scenic walk to a cave and lookout point, which offered breathtaking views of the surrounding karsts.
Kayaking Under the Stars
One of the highlights of the trip was the night kayaking experience. As we paddled through the dark waters, the bioluminescent plankton created a magical display, reminiscent of stars trailing through the sky. It was a surreal experience, and I couldn’t help but feel like I was wielding a wand from a fantasy novel. The tranquility of the night, coupled with the gentle lapping of the water against the kayak, made for an unforgettable adventure.
The following day, we embarked on a boat trip to explore the bays further. The scenery was awe-inspiring, with towering karsts and serene waters. We visited floating houses and kayaked through the Dark and Bright caves, a conservation area for the endangered Cat Ba langur. The opportunity to swim through caves and jump off the boat added an element of fun and excitement to the day. Despite the popularity of Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay offered a more intimate experience, with fewer boats and a sense of tranquility that was hard to find elsewhere.
A Serene Escape
On the final day, I opted to spend a leisurely morning at the homestay, soaking in the peaceful surroundings. The option to cycle or hike through Cat Ba National Park was tempting, but I chose to relax and reflect on the incredible experiences of the past few days. The journey back to Hanoi was smooth, with the Beka staff ensuring that all arrangements were in place.
This trip was a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, offering a glimpse into the local way of life while showcasing the stunning natural beauty of the region. For those who enjoy being off the beaten track and are content with modest accommodations, this Lan Ha Bay Adventure is a must-do. The camaraderie among travelers, the attentive guidance of Thang, and the breathtaking scenery made this an unforgettable experience. I left with a sense of fulfillment and a newfound appreciation for the hidden gems of Southeast Asia.
