Inthe shadow of Etna - Catania city centre is a beautiful place and the back streets around the fish market are full of fascinating trattoria specialising in seafood. That is not to say you can't get fairly simple pizza or pasta. Do try the local ice cream, you will not be disappointed. The baroque architecture of the city really means the churches, of which the Duomo is the big set piece. Do check opening times if you plan to visit. The mixture of black and white materials, the black lava stone and the white limestone makes for a highly effective contrast. There is a tourist "train" that runs around the main city sights in a 40 minute circuit. It's reasonably priced and has commentary in English and via headphones other languages are available, I think.
