Riding the Waves: My First SUP Experience on the Causeway Coast
Drawn by the allure of the ocean and the promise of a new adventure, I embarked on my first Stand-Up Paddleboarding lesson on the stunning Causeway Coast. With the sun shining and the waves inviting, it was an experience that blended relaxation with exhilaration.
Embracing the Waves: My First SUP Adventure
The sun was shining brightly as I arrived at the West Strand Road, ready for my first Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) lesson. As a marine biologist, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean, but this was a new way to experience it. The warmest day of the year so far promised a perfect setting for this adventure. I was greeted by Hanno, our instructor, whose calm demeanor immediately put me at ease. Despite my initial apprehension about the waves, Hanno assured me that we would navigate them together, offering two potential routes to the open water.
On the beach, we began with a warm-up and essential instructions on paddle use and balance. The wetsuit provided was snug and comfortable, a testament to the high-quality equipment the school is known for. As we practiced getting back on the board in deeper water, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. Hanno’s guidance was invaluable, teaching us how to handle incoming waves and the importance of not losing the paddle. His relaxed approach made the learning process enjoyable, even as I absorbed the multitude of instructions.
Conquering the Breakers and Exploring the Cave
With the basics covered, it was time to face the breakers. The initial challenge was exhilarating, and with Hanno’s encouragement, I managed to stand up on the board. The feeling of gliding over the slightly rolling water was indescribable. As we approached a cave, a sudden roller wave tested my balance, but I managed to stay on the board, much to my delight.
Exploring the cave was a highlight, offering a unique perspective of the coastline. Hanno suggested we venture around a rocky outcrop, and though it seemed daunting, his confidence was contagious. I attempted standing again, and this time, I succeeded in maintaining my balance. The key, as Hanno pointed out, was not to overthink it. The views were breathtaking, and the sun’s warmth added to the serene beauty of the experience.
Returning to Shore: A Newfound Love for SUP
As we made our way back to the beach, the breakers once again presented a challenge. A wave from behind sent me into the water, but I didn’t mind. Even Hanno had to work hard to stay on his board, which made me feel better about my own tumble. The entire experience was both relaxing and invigorating, a perfect blend of exercise and exploration.
Reflecting on the day, I was thoroughly impressed with the setup and instruction at the surf school. From the perfectly sized wetsuit to the encouraging words from Hanno, every detail contributed to a memorable adventure. It’s no wonder they have more 5-star reviews than any other surf school in Northern Ireland. I’m already planning a return trip with a friend, eager to share the joy of SUP on the beautiful Causeway Coast and Glens. If you’re looking for a unique way to connect with the ocean, I highly recommend giving SUP a try. Surfing Adventure
