The Route of the White Villages takes you through landscapes that have been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. This includes the Sierra de Grazalema, the Bull of Lidia route, the birthplace of oil production, and the craftwork of leather goods and Andalusian sweets.
In this journey, you can experience the cultural history of Al-Andalus, evident even in the names of most of the 19 towns along the route: such as Benamahoma, (which translates to Muhammad’s house), Alcalá (which means the Castle), Algar (known as the cave), Zahara (known as the fortress), Ronda, Arcos, Ubrique, El Bosque, Grazalema, Benamahoma, Benaocaz, Villaluenga del Rosario, as they are some of the white villages.
