The White Towns of Andalusia refer to a collection of towns located in the south of Spain, predominantly within the confines of Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. Each of the villages boasts white-washed walls and roofs adorned with red or brown tiles.
According to some, the tradition of painting houses white is a measure towards mitigating the intense summer heat that predominantly affects the towns along the Sierra de Grazalema. However, this practice of maintaining white-washed homes has ancient roots in the Mediterranean, harking back to the times of plague epidemics wherein it served as a disinfectant.
When water is combined with lime, it generates a high heat capable of eradicating any microorganism. As a result, inhabitants of towns with ‘white-washed’ houses often evaded disease more frequently than those in other towns.
Though times have evolved, this tradition perseveres, signifying the period to repaint the walls ( ‘white-washed’). So much so that in certain pueblos blancos, residents can paint their home exteriors tax-free.
