So worth it! - I was really unsure of what to expect from this as I read plenty of mixed reviews with different advice given so will cover as many of my own initial queries as I can! We were picked up from Cefalu train station in a plush transfer bus, we had a lovely guide who was fluent in English, French and of course her own Italian tongue. Absolutely no problems here. It took around 2.5 - 3 hours to get there. (we were one of the first to be picked up though) I would advise doing the full tour to the top if you can. It is expensive, but you see much more from the top. I wasn't going to go to go up to begin with, but at this point, it is worth paying the extra to get the most from it.. We paid €65 each when we got there which included both the cable car and the jeep to the top. (This made it a bit better as I thought you had to pay for both separately costing more) We managed to do the whole lot with ample time left. Yes it was busy but the queues moved quickly as the cable cars and jeeps are constantly circulating. The cable cars hold 6 people, the jeeps were around 20-30 odd capacity. We went in August (last week) and it was 28 degrees on the ground. I wore good trainers, shorts and a light top. I did take a jacket and although it did get colder as you go up, it wasn't freezing and my jacket was enough to keep me from the chill in the wind. It was cooler after the cable car section but I didn't really need my jacket at this point, after the jeep I needed to put it on.. (I am from the UK though and maybe a little more used to this temperature? As there were others with full on coats/ jeans etc...?) I've read reviews where people are saying the walk up would be/ is easy enough... I am 29 with an average fitness and personally wouldn't do it given the choice... It looks steep, in some places sandy/ashy and rocky... Probably more of an experienced hikers walk. You are allowed to take the lava and rocks home as souvenirs, it was amazing views from the top and we were guided by a specialist around other craters. You don't go really close to the active part of the volcano but you do get to feel some ground holes which are heated from it. There is also lots of history around the other pre-active craters which you are in full view of. There are plenty of shops around.. dont buy souvenirs from the upper level shop as the lowest level shops are much cheaper. (Even cheaper when we got back to Cefalu and realised there were plenty of Etna souvenirs everywhere in the town) We went to Taormina after.. I will be honest, by this point I was tired and fed up. My feet were hot and I didn't take sandals and also forgot to top up the sun lotion and was slightly burnt. (Don't be fooled by the wind on the volcano.. you're still directly in the sun and is easy to forget) It was so hot in Taormina and I just wanted to be out of the sun. We found a nice little restaurant and got some home made lasagne and chilled here until it was time to go. Others explored and enjoyed their time thoroughly. We took a scenic route home, they said this was because we got back to the bus early, so not sure if this happens for all. Although it is way more €€ than I would usually like to pay on an excursion overall, It was worth every penny and has been the highlight of my holiday ... I would have been gutted to go and not have gone to the top.

Excellent day tour - highly recommended - We thoroughly enjoyed our full day excursion to Mount Etna and Taormina. Marcello (our guide) was brilliant - so knowledgeable , friendly , professional , courteous - everything one would want. His English was very good and he had a very good sense of humour - we felt totally safe in his hands.Being Sicilian his local knowledge of history and geography was interesting - and from the heart. The coach driver (apologies for not remembering his name) was an excellent driver and dealt with many a diversion (due to roadworks etc) , winding roads , other drivers exceptionally well - not an easy task. He was very obliging , friendly , professional and had great care for his passengers. The itinerary was well planned with sufficient comfort stops and sufficient time at Etna and Taormina. The scenic route back to Cefalu from Taormina along the eastern and northern coastlines was stunning with breathtaking views. Very many thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable , pleasant and entertaining day. Very best wishes - Steve and Jenny x

A really recommendable tour - The trip from Cefalú seemed to be much shorter due to the great scenery. Arrived on the Etna I really recommend to take the cable car and continue with the jeep up to the highest point. That was definitely the highlight of the tour. Marcello was a great guide with a great knowledge about Etna and the region. It was remarkable how he could switch between the different languages (French, Italian, English and even German).

This tour was excellent for its... -
This tour was excellent for its content! The first half of the day was Mt. Etna and the 2nd half Taormina, including the Greek Theater. Loved it. We were a family group of 7 - English. We were the only English on the tour, the others were French or Italian. Our tour director tried to cover everything in all 3 languages, but that was difficult to do. Our only complaint would be that we felt we missed a lot of content as his main delivery was in the other 2 languages. Not quite what was advertised. Other than that, it was great and we would highly recommend.

Our tour guide Carmen was excellent... -
Our tour guide Carmen was excellent- helpful, friendly and very good at telling the multi lingual tour attendees interesting information about what we were seeing in French, English and Italian. Ou driver Massimo was also excellent. We both enjoyed the Etna part of the trip a great deal and the weather was brilliant so we had very clear views throughout the time that we were there. It was very interesting and really impressive to see. We would have liked to stay longer ideally.

We then went an hour's drive on to Taomia and had 2 hours there- but would have liked to remain longer as 2 hours did not feel long enough to see everything.

On the way back we were driven through Messina which was interesting as you can see the Italian mainland very clearly fro there.

I found the amount of time spent sitting on the coach while we drove to Etna and on the way back was too much as I all you spend a good 7 hours sitting on the coach driving from Cefalu to Mount Etna and back to Cefalu at the end of the trip, which I feel is too long.

However, I did really enjoy seeing Mount Etna I just would have liked more time there and more time in Taormina too.

Five negative points to... -
Five negative points to make:
1. My first experience of a multilingual guide - nice guy, who spoke Italian and French beautifully but English erratically, and liked to show off his linguistic skills to the Italian and French passengers which he did, at the expense of the bemused Brits on board.
2. Guide never had any intention of letting the few of us on the tour who wanted to view Etna's main crater, queue for up to an hour for transport to the top of the volcano. He must have known before we arrived how long the wait would be - he told us he had been taking groups to Etna for at least 15 years. Queues to visit the top must be a regular occurence but hanging around at Etna would have screwed up the schedule. Fair enough, but why, in that case, advertise the trips to the top at all?
3. No stop for a photo opportunity at Messina although, again, it was mentioned in the blurb advertising the trip.
4. Left Taormina at 4.00pm and arrived back at Cefalu at around 7.15pm without any comfort break of any kind. In fact a woman was so desperate she had to ask to be let off the coach in Cefalu and run into a cafe for the toilet.
5. Finally, although we reached Cefalu first on the coast road we went straight past and on to other hotels well to the west of the town. Then, when we finally got back to Cefalu, we had to sit waiting for a shuttle bus because the guide claimed the coach driver would have trouble negotiating the twisting roads and traffic in Cefalua. Nonsense, he was in fact a very good driver and had managed far tighter and tougher challenges earlier in the tour. It was simply too much trouble for them driving into Cefalu.

Not good enough, Viator. You'll have to try harder I'm afraid.

Mis-communication debacle ruins Etna and Taormina experience. - We booked this tour of Mt Etna and Taormina well in advance of our holiday to Sicily. Viator confirmed the booking in good time and kept us appraised of the trip. The day before the trip, our party received a text confirmation of the excursion. We arrived at our pick up in good time of the transfer and waited for the coach. And waited. And waited. We were supposed to be collected at 06:05am. At 07:00am we placed a call to Viator as we were still waiting. We were advised that Viator could not get through to the local company and apologised. Three hours later, I received a call from the local tour guide advising that the date had been changed; this had been passed to Viator three weeks ago but this had not been passed to us. An alternative day was offered which we could not make as other plans had been made. We cancelled, Viator placing blame on the third party, the third party placing the blame on Viator. We are yet to receive the refund, however, I cannot recommend Viator owing to the reasons outlined in this review. Our party were sincerely looking forward to the trip, however owing to miscommunication internally between Viator and their vendors this did not take place.

In fact, we DO NOT RECOMMEND booking... -
In fact, we DO NOT RECOMMEND booking excursions through VIATOR.
We came to Sicily specially for our eight-year-old son to see an active volcano and our trip was not held because the timetable mentioned in the voucher was wrong, the bus departing an hour earlier. Local representatives of Viator did not verify or inform us of this fact.
A great disappointment.
