Additional Information

The Obscure Tale of Little Africa in the Port of Rio de Janeiro discusses the four million Africans, who were enforced into slavery to Brazil over the period of 300 years.

Rio, during the 19th century was the largest African slave market in the world. Every fifth modern enslaved individual globally ended up in Rio.

It’s no surprise that currently, a majority of Brazilians identify as black.

With evident traces in samba, carnivals, cuisine, music, and religion, the African culture is deeply embedded in Brazil.

Our Walking Tour focuses on the African diaspora’s influence and its enduring heritage in Brazil.

Further, with our Little Africa Walking Tour, you’ll explore the major points of interest in the Saúde Neighborhood, the central location of all our site visits. Hence, Morro da Conceição, Cais do Valongo, Pedra do Sal, Largo de São Francisco da Prainha, Praça Mauá, Rio Art Museum, street art galleries… all lie within Saúde.

Dont miss this Florencia Little Africa tour - The guide, AnnaGuilia, was fantastic. She was young but incredibly passionate, smart, knowledgeable and informative. The area and sites we visited were fascinating and if you dont want a superficial Rio trip, you shouldn't miss this Florencia tour of Little Africa. The tour was inspiring and deeply moving.

Definitely an Essential Tour! - Great tour! Damiana was a wealth of information about the historical events of slavery here in Brazil. It was moving to see the original wharf, and hear stories of what transpired here. This is an essential part of history, so anyone who comes to Rio needs to experience this and learn about the history of Brazil’s inhabitants. It definitely is a must-do tour!

A joy to work with. Professional. Informed. Passionate about Brazil. - My wife and I arranged 4 days of private tours with Damiana Silva’s tour company. We could not have been more pleased with the experience from beginning (a month before our trip) to the end. Damiana was a joy to work with, she is a consummate professional who is passionate about her native country and most importantly, she is a decent lovely person. Her team including drivers (Anderson and Marcus in our case) and other guides (Kelly and Larissa) were informed, thoughtful and full of insights about Rio. I would hire Florencia Tours again without hesitation. Tijuca, Little Africa, Rio, Walking tour, Copacabana, Ipanema, Maracana

A wonderful, unique way to spend an afternoon in Brazil! - This is one if the best tours I've ever experienced and I've done many. The guide Anajulia was so friendly, intelligent and entertaining. Her vast knowledge of african brazilian culture was so comprehensive and impressive. I learned so many fascinating things about the history of Brazil and the enslaved. She is an excellent storyteller and guide. The artwork and landmarks were interesting, heart breaking and beautiful. This unique perspective of the Africa diaspora as it relates to Brazil was an eye opener. I'm so glad I did this tour and met Anajulia.

African American History in Brazil - This tour was phenomenal! If you want a fun, informative history lesson on African Americans and the culture of Brazil (including the origins of Carnival), this is the tour for you! I was lucky enough to get a personalized tour since I was the only person who booked the tour on this day! My tour guide, Larissa, was the BEST! She was very friendly, spoke perfect English, knew a lot of information, and made the tour so interesting! I appreciated the focus on the resilience of African Americans, while getting the full story of their journey from Africa to Brazil. I also loved seeing all of the murals across town - the talent and artistry in Brazil is amazing! Additionally, you get a taste of the favelas and their history, which I recommend you exploring and understanding. I highly recommend this tour to everyone, but especially African Americans; Brazil is rich with our culture and worth the time to learn!

Tour no one should miss! - My husband and I were so very lucky to have a private tour with Damiana. This tour is one no one should miss. It’s an eye opener and an invitation as a collective to begin to repair and most importantly give African decedents the place they deserve in our collective history. Damiana’s passion and compelling way to tell the story of Afro-Brazilians made this tour unforgettable.
