Highlights
  • Njegos Museum Biljarda - You will visit the “new castle” and museum. Biljarda was the castle first used by our famous poet and ruler Njegos, and was named after his favorite game - Billiard. Today it is used as a museum dedicated to Njegos.
  • Museum of King Nikola - King Nicola’s palace today serves as a museum to one of the most interesting figures in Montenegrin history - Nikola Petrovic.
  • National Museum of Montenegro - We will visit the national museum at Cetinje, seeing some very interesting pieces of history. The most interesting piece to see here is Our Lady of Philermos, a Byzantine icon of the Theotokos, dated to the 11th or 12th century. Originally kept at Phileremos Monastery in Rhodes, the icon was long venerated as the patroness of the Knights Hospitaller, and kept at Rhodes and Malta. It is now kept in the Museum of Art and History at Cetinje, Montenegro.

Additional Information

This tour captures the significant historical and cultural essence of Cetinje and its governance during Montenegro’s challenging medieval times. You will explore the aged Montenegrin institutions, now embodying museums of a bygone era, and the time-honored monasteries. Our guide will escort you to the Cetinje’s monastery, also referred to as Petar I Petrović’s monastery, constructed in the early phase of the 18th Century. You will explore the 19th Century castles such as the new castle, Biljarda, devoted to our leader and poet Njegoš. From this point, your walk will extend towards the palace of King Nicholas, now converted into a museum. The museum displays battle trophies, and allows you to weave through the rooms once inhabited by King Nicholas and his kin. Following the castle exploration, our guide will direct you to the former parliament building, currently serving as the National Museum. Home to one of Christianity’s most critical relics, Our of Virgin Filermosa, the museum represents an essential facet of the tour.
