Additional Information

Cetinje, the ancient kingdom of Montenegro, was established in the 15th century and developed as the hub of Montenegrin existence and cultural activity. Presently, it acts as a city museum flourishing with remarkable monuments, walkways, and sceneries under the vast Lovćen Mountain. Formerly the capital of Montenegro, the city under the reign of King Nikola saw the construction of various foreign embassies, giving the city a distinctive identity. The Cetinje Monastery, devoted to the Nativity of the Mother of God, built in 1701, is the city’s most valuable monument.

Lovćen, the embodiment of Montenegro and its liberty, towers 1749m above sea level and was proclaimed a national park in 1952. The Mausoleum, situated on one of Lovćen’s peaks, Jezerski vrh, 1675m above sea level, pays homage to Petar II Petrović Njegoš, a bishop, leader, philosopher, and poet, and an iconic figure of Montenegrin history. He selected this location as his eternal resting place.
