Highlights
  • Chandannagar - Dupleix Palace is an excellent starting point to understand the French heritage of Chandanpur. Today, it serves as a museum showcasing cannons from the Carnatic wars, artifacts, and furniture of French governor generals, along with various other relics.

  • Patal Bari - This beautiful mansion is partially submerged in the Hooghly river. ‘Patal Bari’ translates to ‘the underground house.’ Notable features include intricately carved wooden sunshades and water outlets. In its prime, it hosted significant visitors to Chandan Nagar, including the national poet Rabindranath Tagore and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar.

  • The Strand - The Strand boasts the finest collection of colonial buildings. Its highlight is the Durgacharan Rakshit Ghat, a stunning pavilion with grand columns and captivating stucco work, built in the 1920s to honor Durgacharan, a recipient of France’s Legion d’honneur. The pavilion features slender columns adorned with decorative stucco designs of elephant heads and floral patterns.

  • Shrine Basilica Bandel - This two-storied church with twin towers, built in 1884, features a magnificent statue of Jesus, beautiful stained glass windows, and colored reliefs of Jesus carrying the cross on the walls.

  • Bandel - Built in 1660, this church is dedicated to Nostra Senhora di Rozario, also known as Our Lady of the Rosary. The vintage tombstones surrounded by violet blossoms create a picturesque setting. The most poignant statue in the complex is the marble figure of Mother of Sorrows holding the body of dead Jesus on her lap, evoking deep emotions.

  • Serampore - The Rajbari is a grand mansion belonging to the Goswami family, historically the wealthiest in Serampore. Invited by the King of Gaur to settle in Bengal and establish a business under favorable terms, this opulent residence was built in 1820 and was the most luxurious in the area.

  • Serampore College - In the 19th century, Serampore was renowned for its educational institutions. William Carey founded Serampore College, the first university in Bengal. The first Bengali newspaper, Samachar Darpan, was published on 23 May 1818 from a Baptist Mission Press located here.

  • The Denmark Tavern - In the 19th century, Serampore was renowned for its educational institutions. William Carey founded Serampore College, the first university in Bengal. The first Bengali newspaper, Samachar Darpan, was published on 23 May 1818 from a Baptist Mission Press located here.

5 Senses delivers another great tour - This was another great tour from 5 Senses. Anibal organised a fantastic day for us visiting former European colonies in towns and cities outside Kolkata. He picked us up from our hotel in Kolkata on time and in the car he was brimming with information about what we were going to see during the day. Anibal’s tour provided a fantastic insight into the history of the Portuguese, Danish and French in the area. He knew the best places to show us and also organised a delicious Bengali lunch. It was a real joy to spend the day in the company of Anibal. Thanks for another great trip, 5 Senses.

Kolkata city tour - It was a very good tour of the city as we walked like a local among the streets of Kolkata and experienced it from street level. A good tour for anyone who has a limited time in Kolkata, but would like to gain the most experience.
