  • Wat Rong Khun - White Temple (Wat Rong Khun)

Rong Khun Temple is unique from other temples in that it has been constructed entirely in a radiant white color with sparking reflections from mirrored glass mosaics embedded in the white plaster. The temple is the idea of Mr. Chalermchai Kositpipat, one of Thailand most renowned artists, who wanted to build a temple all in white to signify the purity of Lord Buddha. The artist continues to puts his religious belief and desire to enrich Buddhism in Thailand into his contemporary art design.

Rong Khun). The great standing Buddha, also white, standing in front of the back, is also superb. Between the White Temple, the Black House and the Blue Temple, Chiang Rai is definitely the city of colorful temples!

  • Baan Dam Museum - Bann Dam (Black House) Museum

207 Km. drive from the middle of Chiang Mai city to Baan Dam (Black House) is the unique creation of national artist, Thawan Duchanee. Part art studio, part museum, part home, Baan Dam is an eclectic mix of traditional northern Thai buildings interspersed with some outlandish modern designs. Baan Dam is a thought-provoking combination of sanuk, the surreal and the sombre and whilst it’s fair to say that some of the artwork and themes on display won’t be to everybody’s liking, I’d still recommend checking out the Black House if you are visiting Chiang Rai.

  • Wat Rong Seur Ten (Blue Temple) - Chiang Rai Blue Temple

Chiang Rai Blue Temple or Wat Rong Seua Ten is located in Rong Suea Ten in the district of Rimkok a few kilometers outside Chiang Rai. It is a recent temple which is still under construction even if its main hall is now completed. It is above all its magnificent blue interior with a large white Buddha that marks the spirits. The paintings are reminiscent of the style of what you can see inside the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun)

  • Golden Triangle - Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle is the area where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet at the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong rivers. The name “Golden Triangle”coined by the CIA is commonly used more broadly to refer to an area of approximately 950,000 square kilometres (367,000 sq mi) that overlaps the mountains of the three adjacent countries.

Along with Afghanistan in the Golden Crescent, it has been one of the most extensive opium-producing areas of Asia, and of the world, since the 1950s. Most of the world’s heroin came from the Golden Triangle until the early 21st century when Afghanistan became the world’s largest producer.

Smile for smiles - Tour guide Smile and driver Mark were fantastic. We squeezed alot into 1 day and they were good about keeping us on schedule. Smile had good tips of yummy deserts. We squeezed in a long neck village and foot hot springs as well. Highly recommend!

I highly recommend this... - I highly recommend this tour. Although Chiang Rai is about 3.5 hours from Chiang Mai, all the places we’ve visited were worth the long trip. Our guide Ms. Fern is knowledgeable. She told us about the sites. My husband and I especially love the White Temple. It was interesting to know about the history of the Golden Triangle.

Best value for the price - Even though we saw some bad reviews, we decided to take a chance. And it was a great idea. The tour is nice, they get you at your hotel, the driver does his job fast but accurate, the guide was incredibly nice and the boat minitrip was the cherry up the cake. It is true that a bit more explanations about Thai culture and Buddhist traditions inside the temples would make the experience full, but those given were sufficient. Definitely would recommend this tour to anyone willing to do the Chiang Rai area in a day, best value for the price that we were able to find. Thanks guys!

Day from Chiang Mai - Both temples seemed too "artificial" to us, especially the white one. The black house is gorgeous and we wish we had spent more time there than the tour allowed. Unfortunately, during the boat trip to the Golden Triangle we were unable to disembark in Laos as the guide told us that the border was still closed. Unfortunately no one had warned us before the excursion. Friendly and engaging guide.

A Long Day - This is a long day if you're starting in Chiang Mai. The white wat is stunning from the outside and is the highlight of the day by far. It's been beautifully built but is very modern. There are some lovely other buildings in the grounds. The national artist has a separate section and clearly he loves himself with the amount of sculptures and pictures of himself around the place. The blue wat is also beautiful from the outside but is less impressive inside. As for the black houses, this is an interesting collection of old buildings but you can't go into most of them and it gets a bit repetitive. The main building has a lot of paintings and furniture but it won't be for everyone's taste. Not worth coming all the way from Chiang Mai if this is your only destination but if you're including other sites nearby, probably worth a 45 minute stop. I noticed a number of other reviewers commenting on the speed of the drivers. Ours clearly thought he was in a formula 1 racing car and drove in straight lines on some twisty sections of the mountain highway. That said, he was safe but if you're a nervous passenger, you might want to sit way in the back of the van.

Disappointing - We had to pay for the long neck (600 THB) not included in the tour but the people with us had taken it. On the way back, the driver left us in the street 1km from the hotel while the other people arrived in front of their hotel. The 4 hours back after a long day are exhausting. The golden triangle and the not-so-great boat excursion. The white temple and the black house are to be seen but the blue temple is Disney! The lunch was not good at all, lots of choice but everything was dry.

I could have just kept the temples. - The trip to the temples was good and the temples are beautiful but the rest is a waste of time. We had to pay to enter the village of women with neck rings because if we didn't pay we would have to wait 40 minutes outside while members of the group went. The guide said it was an optional tour but this never appeared in the tour description or any other information about detouring an hour from the tour for this. The Mekong visit is not worth it. Hours are wasted traveling for a bad boat trip, in an area that has nothing and precarious infrastructure. There is no beauty either. It's a four-hour drive back. Extremely tiring. We arrived back in Chiang Mai after 22:00. In short, only take a trip to the temples that are worth it. Don't go to the Mekong and Golden Triangle.

Not so recommended - Really long tour. The white temple is nice (even if it has no history - built in 1997). If I’m not wrong, the visit to the longneck village was not mentioned in the trip description and I perceived it as exploiting refugees but it is optional. The guide was a nice person but explaination were like 1 minute only for each stop/ sight and her English was really difficult to understand.
