- Chiang Rai - A 207 km drive from the center of Chiang Mai city leads to Baan Dam (Black House), a unique creation by national artist Thawan Duchanee. This site serves as an art studio, museum, and home, featuring a blend of traditional northern Thai architecture and striking modern designs. Baan Dam offers a thought-provoking mix of fun, surrealism, and somber themes. While some of the artwork may not appeal to everyone, visiting the Black House is highly recommended when in Chiang Rai. The total round trip drive takes about 5 hours.
- Wat Rong Khun - Known as the White Temple, Wat Rong Khun stands out with its entirely white structure, adorned with mirrored glass mosaics that sparkle in the sunlight. This temple is the brainchild of Chalermchai Kositpipat, one of Thailand’s most celebrated artists, who envisioned a white temple to symbolize the purity of Lord Buddha. His religious beliefs and dedication to enhancing Buddhism in Thailand are evident in his contemporary art design.
- Golden Triangle - The Golden Triangle is where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar converge at the meeting point of the Ruak and Mekong rivers. The term “Golden Triangle,” coined by the CIA, broadly refers to an area of about 950,000 square kilometers (367,000 sq mi) spanning the mountains of these three countries. Alongside Afghanistan in the Golden Crescent, it has been a major opium-producing region in Asia and the world since the 1950s. Until the early 21st century, most of the world’s heroin originated from the Golden Triangle, before Afghanistan became the leading producer.
- Wat Rong Seur Ten (Blue Temple) - Located in Rong Suea Ten in the Rimkok district, a few kilometers from Chiang Rai, the Blue Temple is a recent addition still under construction, though its main hall is complete. Its stunning blue interior, featuring a large white Buddha, is truly captivating. The paintings inside resemble those found in the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun). The impressive standing white Buddha at the back is also noteworthy. With the White Temple, Black House, and Blue Temple, Chiang Rai is undoubtedly the city of vibrant temples!
- Karen Long Neck Village - Visiting one of Thailand’s many Karen Long Neck villages offers one of the most exotic experiences imaginable. The tradition of wearing brass rings as jewelry is a fascinating sight best appreciated in person. Although there were ethical concerns about these hill tribe villages resembling human zoos, the visit proved to be a real-life National Geographic experience that must be seen to be believed.
- Baan Dam Museum - A 207 km drive from the center of Chiang Mai city leads to Baan Dam (Black House), a unique creation by national artist Thawan Duchanee. This site serves as an art studio, museum, and home, featuring a blend of traditional northern Thai architecture and striking modern designs. Baan Dam offers a thought-provoking mix of fun, surrealism, and somber themes, though some artwork may not appeal to everyone.
