Baking Bliss in Chania: A Sourdough Adventure
In search of a unique experience, I ventured to Chania for a sourdough workshop. The allure of baking bread in a wood-fire oven amidst the rustic charm of Crete was irresistible.
A Warm Welcome in Chania
As a nomadic surfer, I’m always on the lookout for unique experiences that take me off the beaten path. When I heard about the Sourdough Workshop in Chania, I knew it was something I had to try. The idea of baking bread in a wood-fire oven, surrounded by the rustic charm of Crete, was too tempting to resist.
Upon arrival, I was greeted with a warm smile and a homemade refreshment. The hostess, Veerna, exuded a passion for sourdough that was infectious. As we sipped on Greek coffee and nibbled on cookies, she explained the intricacies of sourdough bread making. Her enthusiasm set the tone for what would be an unforgettable day.
Kneading and Baking
The workshop was intimate, with just eight participants, which allowed for a personalized experience. Veerna guided us through the process of mixing ingredients and preparing our dough. Each of us had the opportunity to add our own twist to the bread, whether it was olives, sun-dried tomatoes, or seeds.
As the dough rested, we took a stroll through the olive grove. Veerna shared the secrets of olive oil harvesting and the art of mixing it with herbs. It was a fascinating insight into a world I knew little about, and it made me appreciate the simple pleasures of life even more.
Back at the workshop, the aroma of baking bread filled the air. We harvested fresh veggies from the farm to prepare a Cretan salad and other side dishes. The anticipation built as we waited for our loaves to emerge from the wood-fire oven.
A Feast for the Senses
When the bread was finally ready, it was a feast for the senses. The crust was perfectly golden, and the aroma was intoxicating. We gathered around a table laden with Greek dishes, different kinds of olive oil, and, of course, our freshly baked bread.
The atmosphere was cozy and relaxed, much like the beach towns I frequent in Central America. Veerna and her family were incredibly welcoming, and their passion for what they do was evident in every detail. They even toasted to my fellow participant’s birthday, adding a personal touch to the day.
As we savored our creations, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experience. It was a reminder of the simple joys in life and the beauty of connecting with others over a shared love of food. If you ever find yourself in Chania, I highly recommend this workshop. It’s a unique opportunity to slow down, savor the moment, and create something truly special.
