Venetian Walls and Tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis - The Venetian Walls were part of the city’s fortress, known as Candia by the Venetians. Two city gates, Chania and Kainouria, have survived through the centuries. Visitors can enjoy a walk outside and around the walls. At the southwestern corner of the City Walls lies the Tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis (1883-1947), the renowned local author of “Zorba the Greek” and “The Last Temptation of Christ,” one of the most significant Greek authors of all time. Take in the panoramic view of the city center and the stunning sea.
-
Cathedral of St. Minas - The Cathedral of St. Minas is dedicated to the Patron Saint of Heraklion. It endured significant damage during past battles and took 30 years to rebuild. Adjacent to the grand Cathedral is a smaller, older St. Minas church, and in the nearby square, visitors can explore the former church of St. Ekaterini, which now exhibits Byzantine ecclesiastical treasures and icons.

Morosini Fountain (Lion’s Fountain) - Morosini’s Fountain, or Four Lion Square, was built during the Venetian Era to meet the needs of Candia, the island’s capital city. Today, it serves as a popular meeting point for locals, surrounded by various shops offering coffees, ice creams, and other treats. Opposite the Fountain is the Basilica of St. Mark, a significant Venetian-era building that now houses the Municipal Art Gallery, open to the public almost all day, every day.
-
Loggia - The Venetian Loggia is located in the center of Heraklion city. Constructed by Francesco Morosini during the Venetian rule, it is an impressive building from the Venetian era that has withstood the test of time and currently serves as the Town Hall of Heraklion.
